Most Tactically/Financially Astute City Manager Before 2008

I've always considered Sven to be a man who threw away millions on shite from Italy

Stories have always persisted that he had Luka Modric and Nicolas Anelka lined up in the January, but Shinawatra refused to release the funds (as he had none), he did have some contacts in the market did Sven.

Although I do agree that Bianchi and Bojinov were poor signings in hindsight.

Would have to be Brian Horton for me, definitely my favorate City boss pre-takeover.... managed to keep an ailing side up during his first season against what must have been a really difficult backdrop of the Swales-Lee takeover battle, used what little money he had reasonably well, (Kernaghan apart, but think of Rosler, Walsh, Beagrie et al) and had the boldness to widen the pitch and play an all-out-attack 4-2-4 at home which led to great football after 3-seasons of the Reid/Ellis long-ball to big Quinny so-called 'football' we had endured. For me the underrated man ever to take the City hot-seat and one who, in hindsight, punched above his weight.

Horton certainly played the most entertaining football. Probably of the recent past the best was Mel Machin. Very astute and underrated manager. Sven was a chancer and bought rubbish.

Royle

Undisputed

I'm inclined to Kendall and Horton but I think a case could be made for Book if he is compared to his successors rather than his Mercer/Allison close predecessors. He did win a trophy and stepped in as a caretaker some years later.

Financially astute award must go to Kendall who did some great wheeler dealing at City but also a notable mention to Billy McNeill who got us promoted on peanuts.

John Bond........Royle did the most important job though.

Yeah two great shouts actually. Both inherited massive messes and sorted them out. Bondy splashed a bit on Trevor though didn't he, although I'm sure the proceeds from the cup run the year before may have helped.
