No I think Hughes found out they were talking to people (Hiddink's agent confirmed they'd approached him a couple of days before) and he's not the sort of person to stand by and shrug his shoulders. He was supposedly prepared to walk out over Thaksin selling Ireland to Sunderland behind his back not long after he took the job.
Cook has already admitted that MH had come to see him a couple of weeks before about rumours that they were talking to other managers so it doesn't take a great leap of imagination to postulate that Cook denied it or played it down, then Hughes finds out he's not telling the truth. A big row then ensues (back me or sack me), club have to make a decision so they quickly speak to Mancini who is prepared to come in for 6 months. This means they can call Hughes' bluff and let him walk.
