After over 20 years living overseas, we've decided to move back to the UK for a couple of years at least. No doubt since I was last there things have changed a lot and I'm struggling to think of the best place to move to.

Basically looking for a family friendly area with low crime, good schooling options and access to nice countryside. I wouldn't like to live in a city but would like to not be too far away from one.

Any suggestions (other than don't do it)?

Manchester /close thread.

Best City on the planet, all it's missing is a beach.

I wouldn't leave Phuket for this place, you'll be disappointed by how much it has changed in 20 years.

Stay put is my advice!

That would be my favourite option but we have our reasons.

Surely there must still be nice, safe, friendly areas to live or has it really gone downhill that badly?

We still have property in Thailand and always have the option of moving back if it doesn't work out.

You got any area you would prefer PB?

I live down south on the edge of the New Forest, it's nice down here, depends what your intentions are fella.

Consider Great Malvern, Worcester..
Stuning town, has everything you want.
Lived there before i moved out of the UK as I couldnt live in MCR
If i ever had to return it would be there
Good luck

No real specific area. Just wast a nice, low-crime area with access to decent schooling and proximity to a city for entertainment, shopping etc.

Areas that top the list at present are Norfolk, North Yorkshire and Devon but am open to other areas too.

The Great Malvern recommendation was interesting as I had never considered that area but will have a look into it.

Your reasons must be pretty strong to return as 20 years have not been kind to the UK. I know that soemtimes it can be all too easy to be disparaging and down on the place you live as you tend to only see the bad bits and don't appreciate the good until it's too late, but I fear that is not necessarily the case on this occassion and it really has turned into a shit-hole.

I do love Devon & Cornwall and some part of Shropshire are supposed to be very nice, but my recommendation would be somewhere like North Berwick. Lots of countryside and equi-distant (I think) between Newcastle and Edinburgh which was recently voted as the best place to live in the UK.

Wherever you decide upon I wish you and yours all the best for the future and hope that you will be happy.

ps: as my username suggests, I wouldn't bother with Irlam. Just saying!

lived in Irlam for 10 years its not that bad!
heres a link to Great Malvern.... even if you dont choose to live there go visit its stunning

Don't listen to all this bollocks about Britain going to the dogs over the last 20 years.

It is still the best place in the world to live in and from the criteria you have provided there will be hundreds of places you could comfortably settle.

The only thing you need to be aware of is if you once worked for Radio 1 you will be arrested.

realistically there are places all over that meet your criteria. That being so, the weather could be the clincher, and the further south you go it is generally warmer. If by any mischance you were thinking of London, it is now cheaper to live in Barcelona and commute to Laandon. good luck

You considering moving from Irlam back to the UK,Good man.

Go on I'll throw my home village of Littleborough into the ring. Now it's near Rochdale but don't let that put you off. It ticks the 4 boxes you require plus it's only half an hour from Manchester and the right side of town for the Etihad!
