Moving back to the UK but where?

This is a poll as such that Channel 4 news did not so long ago

http://www.channel4.com/news/where-is-the-best-place-to-live-in-england-and-wales

Now the factors that they took into account were average earnings compared to house prices, local schools in league tables, Crime statistics, , Amenities etc... Now what you need to do is consider your priorities, you say that you want to live near a city, is this for larger shops, theatre, large cinemas etc what is your pull towards been near a city. (If it's for culture, concerts etc.. get a big felt tip pen and put a cross through Cornwall & Devon).

You may also have priorities like going to City games so obviously road and public transport is gonna be near the top of the list. Getting a compass and drawing a huge circle around Manchester and beyond would be the route to go. Do you want a small village with just a pub, newsagent and a post office or do you fancy a small town where there is stuff going on but not everybody knows your business but plenty of shops and amenities.

Without getting personnel are your kids white British because getting down to the South West will open your eyes if they are not.

You've not really given us much to go on about what you want from your 'hometown'

Left Blackley in 1973 to live and work in Lincolnshire, still get back to Manchester to watch City and see my Mum and sister's but would never go back to live there, I live in a small village 17 miles from Lincoln so its not to far from the shops, restuarants and night life.

Marple Bridge
20 mins in the train to Manchester and very countrified village.
3 good pubs with good food
Restaurants
Very good primary school
No the one on your right going into MB if you are coming from Romiley .

Rosehill? OFSTED think otherwise

Harrogate is a weird place, very snobby if that bothers you, I used to mystery shop full time, and covered most of Yorkshire for nearly ten years, and that was the only place I consistently felt like I was something under the feet of the shop assistants etc. I was paid to assess - too bad for them I was on the job :)

York is nearby, but might as well be on another planet - fantastic people and place, loads to see and do, schools coming out of your ears, University, history, and near enough to Leeds to dip in and out of the big city. There are tons of little villages just outside York would do for you.

I personally like Hebden Bridge for it's hippy vibe, but it's not for everyone and I believe schools might be an issue getting in to a local one - you'd need to come and see the place for yourself really.

Good luck with your search, you have a very healthy budget to play with, most areas in the country are accessible to you with £500k :)

After over 20 years living overseas, we've decided to move back to the UK for a couple of years at least. No doubt since I was last there things have changed a lot and I'm struggling to think of the best place to move to.

Basically looking for a family friendly area with low crime, good schooling options and access to nice countryside. I wouldn't like to live in a city but would like to not be too far away from one.

Any suggestions (other than don't do it)?

Move back to your roots. No point in coming back otherwise. Because that's why you want to come home.
I have been there and your roots, family, background, childhood, schooling etc is what makes up your DNA
and the call of home is strong. Very strong...

If it helps I was away for 26 years, I returned 3 Years ago to my Roots. It was a bit of a struggle to begin with but as said previously Manchester is a brilliant place to be its got everything, you can live in the beautiful surrounding countryside and be in the Centre within 30 mins no brainer, oh and I have rediscovered my love for City and get to the Etihad when I am back !!

Would love to hear your opinions on Manchester now and then and the differences. It's been a gradual process for us who have lived here all that time but to come back to post bomb Manchester must have been amazing

I feel the city centre has been on the slide again last couple of years, hope it is a temporary blip

Ribble Valley in Lancs is just stunning.
Otherwise just buy an edition of Cheshire Life or Lancashire life and see what you can get for 500k.You won't be dissapointed.

What about Platt Bridge TCIB??????? :-0

Nice places suggested but if you move to one of them and you have no more than five digits on each hand and foot you'll be ran out of town with pitchforks and garden hoes in hand.

seriously PB your going to get depressed in all that grey cloud & rain after Phuket

why not come to sunny Queensland, great choice of schools both state & private. Great beaches, perfect weather, shorts all year round, good vibes, laid back, half naked girls wandering around (like your used too)
