Muffin or Barm

Re: Barm or Muffin

Crikey!

This thread pops up all the time on City off topic forums for some reason. Erm, I'm not bothered as long as the butter is dripping down my fingers from them.

Thats it! I'm getting my legal team on this. You'll be sorry.

I'm with you Swales lives. We will take this to the highest court in the land to prove once and for all it is barm and not muffin.

Re: Barm or Muffin

I used to work in a cake shop and had to make around 200.......wait for it.....BARMS a day.
So in my professional capacity with insider knowledge of all doughy treats, its barms all the way.

Re: Barm or Muffin

This causes me a lot of anxiety.

I travel all over the place for work and it's Muffin, barmcake, barm, cob, roll, even in some places 'trencher' or 'bloomer'!
It's got to stop! How do you know when you've crossed the border from barmcake to cob or vice versa, or one of the other million variations FFS?
Go into a shop in one place and ask for a cheese salad cob and they think you want a loaf sandwich! Ask for a barmcake down the road and they think you're taking the piss!

There need to be a Manchester Standard Language put in place IMO. It's a barm/barmcake. End of.

Re: Barm or Muffin

According to the Compact Oxford English Dictionary

muffin • noun 1 (N. Amer. English muffin) a thick, flattened bread roll made from yeast dough and eaten split, toasted, and buttered. 2 chiefly N. Amer. a small domed cake.

barm • noun the froth on fermenting malt liquor. — ORIGIN Old English.

Definitely not a barm. But it confounds the muffin issue by describing it as a flattened bread roll
