Nadim Zahawi

Zahawi not exactly apologising for his wrongdoings In his resignation letter. Basically having a go at the fourth estate and, as always, making great play of his rags to riches story. He never seems to mention that his grandfather was once the head of the Bank of Iraq, and if the UK really is as great as he enthuses, why does his father choose to live elsewhere now, and why do such people try to get their money out of the country as quickly and quietly as possible?

Just read the sacking letter from Sunak to Zahawi. Apart from the usual platitudes one weird thing is that he described Zahawi as “Kurdish born” implying that his ethnicity changed at some point. Just odd.

Since when did it become “in vogue” to congratulate disgraced MPs on their achievements. Johnson had a tonne of people kissing his arse on the way out despite being ousted due to covering up for a sex offender.

Now Sunak is congratulating Zahawi on “his achievements”. The man has robbed the public purse of potentially millions. What does somebody have to do to not get a golden send off from their cronies in the Tory party?

It’s all a bit “Mussolini made the trains run on time” to take an extreme example. They should be torching the bridges and distancing themselves from these people not slapping their back as they head out the door.

It’s so lacking in any kind of attachment to the real world… I just despair.

The Kurds in Iraq, and other places, are transient, trying to stake a claim to part of a country and make it their own. Long history and I assume he is from the northern area of the country.

In other words “Look how brilliant I’ve been and it’s all the press’s fault”. No acknowledgment of wrongdoing.

What a twat.

Classic senior dismissal protocol. Decision taken day ago and most likely before the fake investigation started.
Deal obviously done. Coordinated comms from dismissed and dismisser. No admission of guilt, play up the positive contribution (however limited). Try to move on with dismisser taking the bullish high ground…. Look how decisive I am.

Must think people are stupid. Tick tock wankers

Nope, he was born in Baghdad, so his Kurdishness is related to his ethnicity not the location of his birth. If he was described as an Iraqi born Kurd it would have made more sense. It’s a minor point but you’d think the PM should get it right.

Born in Baghdad to a kurdish family?

I liked this just for the last 3 words ;-)

Fair one. I’d usually have a look online but wouldn’t want to give this **** any form of click.

Rags to riches? The man went to two different independent schools, but because he started out in a comp, that's apparently rags to riches. There's this idea that any immigrant that isn't a billionaire is somehow underprivileged. It's bollocks. I remember reading a statistic that the kids of African immigrants are far more likely to study medicine, and I was thinking, "Of course they are. Half their parents are already doctors." Most immigrants from outside of Europe are comfortably upper-middle class in their own country. I think it comes from this American idea where everything has to be seen through the lens of race, so we end up with the absurd situation of congratulating a billionaire for overcoming the barriers in his life to become the first Asian PM, and are treated to a cabinet that is one of the most diverse in history in every sense except which school you went to and how much your dad earned.

It’s like Sunak always mentioning his mother, working in a chemists, rather than mentioning his father working as a GP. They’d gain more respect if they just told people the truth.

I think his family were part of the Iraqi government and in private businesses. We all know that the Iraqi government looked after and kept the money for themselves so I’d suggest they were extremely rich to get a pass to our country.
