Nadine Dorries

I'm not sure the £80k for one of her daughter's annual salary is correct.

80k is almost the same as an MP's salary. Unless it is being paid with outside donations, it would seem excessively high.

Can't see any reports of it other than those that refer to 80k as the total.

They did change the rules so MPs couldn't employ their family, although it wasn't retroactive. Which meant those already employed before the legislation could stay.

Perhaps it would have made better sense to give them severance packages and employ people not related to MPs.

Okay fair enough. And yes, of course that would have made better sense, but obviously MPs aren't going to vote for that. The amount they kick and scream about completely reasonable suggestions like not having second jobs. Let's be honest, they'll probably just get them a job with one of their MP friend's offices instead, and then return the favour.

Here's a list of the jobs and the salaries they can claim.

Perfectly reasonable for jobs that are advertised to the general public. Another example of MPs doing something that would result in disciplinary action in any other public office. The amount of shit we have to go through to show that we're not just hiring our friends.

Yes. The spouse or children swapping diid cross my mind when I was composing my message, but then I remembered how two-faced many politicians are and how they might not want to appoint their own moles.

It's amazing how quickly they got back to ripping off the taxpayer after riding out that little scandal, isn't it? Even managed to get a massive pay rise into the bargain. Did anything actually change as a result of the expenses scandal? Because in 2009, she was investigated for claiming 24k for a second home that was actually her main residence (and yet somehow didn't end up in prison for fraud, because if it's the taxpayer you're stealing from, apparently it's fine), which is small change compared to the obvious overpaying of her daughter. Why would a researcher for an MP be paid the same as an MP? I've seen jobs advertised as a researcher, and unless it's in a science laboratory, it's typically a pretty junior role, and even as a senior researcher in a university, most people would be lucky to be on over 80k.

But yeah, an absolute liability who was handed a safe seat because the Tories wanted a token working class woman on their benches. Which I guess is slightly better than their usual use of safe seats, which is to get another Eton chum on the gravy train.
The expense scandal showed us that we, the public, just don’t care. They were caught with their hands deep in the public till. There was a brief outcry then... nada. Mealy-mouthed apologies, Blears holding up a cheque on question time begging us to let her pay it back, David laws paying his lover’s rent, then promoted to cabinet, Pickles saying he needed 2 houses to make sure he got to work on time. Corrupt shower of utter twats should have been marched unceremoniously to the end of the plank and tarred and feathered in a bubbling pit on the Thames

That was the point where - to have an effective reset - the electorate should have demanded any MP caught doing it should have been made to stand down a refight for their seat ( assuming their local party was happy to put them forward ) they got off the hook and look at the rewards - 2012 Zahawi claims nearly £6k to heat his stables - 10 years later he is Education Secretary - thats him punished eh? Oh last year he was happy to see £20 pw taken off the poorest too

How can that in any way be right. Even in a private company this wouldnt be permitted. There's clearly serious conflict on interest here. How on earth as voting members of the public, as tax payers, are we not able to do something g about this. That's before we get to the fact that she's repeatedly smashed out of her tree on national TV and half the time being down right rude.
Add to that that she has been caught fraudulently claiming for a second home and honestly, I'm astonished we are powerless.

Is it any wonder that nobody trusts politicians and governments. Absolutely shocking and appalling behaviour.

It's just fkin common sense that this isn't allowed but they honestly just don't fkin see what they are doing is so wrong because they are so imbred.

I'm absolutely furious that I pay for her out of my salary. I'm paying to be made to look a complete and total twat.

She’s a grifter who will take what she can, but it’s not your fault.

It's not allowed now the rules were changed a few years ago prohibiting them employing close family members going forward although any already in place are allowed to remain.

The expense scandal was one of the worst things to ever happen to our democracy, It could be argued it led to Brexit, austerity, shrinking of the state and many other things as well.

What is rarely mentioned is why expenses became an issue. In the 80s with unemployment running out of control and inflation needed to brought under control, the Tory government of the time made the decision that MPs should not get a pay rise as it would look bad in those hard times. Instead they introduced expense allowances. MPs took advantage of this huge mistake and as their pay was not increasing it appeared valid as most companies offer expenses of you work away from home etc. Mine did and it was quite normal.

I have always been of the opinion that MPs are paid too little, this means generally only people who can afford to become MPs try to get elected. That we have so many rich MPs in parliament proves that point to some degree. You are unlikely to get a shelf stacker, a road sweeper to run for election, where as a business man or a banker can. We end up with a parliament dominated by the wealthy who run the country for the wealthy.

I would look at doubling MPs wages, but scrapping expenses apart from travel from Parliament to Constituency. If potential prospective MPs see that is the case we may be more likely to have a parliament that is more representative of the people, less open to accusations of expense fraud and as a result more trustworthy.

There are also many other measures i would introduce as well, but if there are no expenses then the likes of Dorries can pay for staff out of her wages if she wants them. I imagine that staff numbers would dramatically decrease

No, no, I'm sure he'll be a responsible hands on Dad and stump up all the necessary maintenance payments when he runs off with another blonde that takes his fancy...

Can't be Dorries though. He always goes for a younger model.

3rd family seems an inevitability.

MP apologists regularly defend them, by stating "most mps are decent hard-working people who sacrifice money and power just out of a sense of public duty" . The fact they believe this completely unproven shite is shocking.
There are so many ways to "legally ha" supplement their pittance, you need an accountant/tax fiddler to use them "efficiently" "Lobbyists" aka bribery experts can and have expedited changes to the laws of the land, regulations in commerce, employment law in fact everything. They do not do it for free, or ever ever for the public good. Bribery/corruption has been endemic to parliament since Magna Carta, but never so blatant, so deeply ingrained , as the HoP we have had since the eighties. Co-inciding with the death of a neutral press/media. Too many skeletons in too many mp's cupboards, too many inducements dangling, for any cleansing to come from the "establishment", so what comes next? One thing for cast-iron 24 carat certainty, paying mps more is not the cure.
