Plenty on here ( myself included ) scoffed at Johhny fucking Evans when Pep was showing interest . In the end I think WBA priced any deal out of the window , but I watched him over the weekend and he was very good . Ok it was against Villa for context .

However Souness , who I rate as one of the best pundits, was talking about his performances for Leicester and saying what a good signing he had been for them for very little money.

So whilst supporters are quick to dismiss certain players, perhaps we shouldn't be too quick to judge .

I'll go now and await the bombardment .

No idea whether we want him or not, I'll leave that to the club. I can well imagine the posts though if he went to Chelsea and was a success.

CBB, it's a well thought out, pragmatic post...however JFE is an ex rag.

If we were going to sign an ex rag at this point in our lives, I'd want it to be a game changing 'Tevez like' signing worthy of another city centre billboard and that would piss off the rags no end.

Call me old fashioned, but good value punts on mediocre signings aren't worth it if they're ex rags, especially ex rags who learned their trade under GPC and probably laughed at his bile aimed at us.

;-)

Get him bought.

Young, athletic, pace, good defender, etc. Reminds me of a young VVD.

We cannot go into the 2nd half of the season with Fern playing centre half, and inconsistent Stones and Otemendi messing up constantly. If we do, we're f***ed, especially if La Porte has a relapse or get's injured again.

He doesn't remind me of VVD at all other than his nationality and being good with his feet. He's even shorter than Walker and almost a head shorter than VVD. He's also much weaker than VVD and not the same aerial threat because of his height. Left footed like Laporte as well. If we want someone like VVD we should look at Koulibaly or Skriniar, maybe punt on Ruben Dias or Konate to become something similar.

The main questions I’d ask at this point are; Does he partner Laporte? Is he better than Laporte? Both answers IMO are no.

Being quite short for a CB means he won’t be able to partner with Ferna either meaning he’s only be viable next to Stones or whoever we sign as Otamendi’s replacement.

I’d wait until summer and see who’s available then.

What you have to remember with Ake is that he classes as Home Grown due to his time with Chelsea so if we are interested in buying in Jan it means we are not forced to sell as we have a full quota of overseas players already registered in both the PL & CL squads, where as we have room for homegrown players.

For what it's worth, my opinion is i like Ake, i reckon he would fit into the team well & develop under Pep, however if signing him meant Garcia moved further the down the pecking order then id wait till the summer & then see whats about. With Stones potentially injured again, time to start giving Garcia more game time, starting tomorrow in Zagreb

For the money it'd cost, might as well go for Koulibaly. If he's as good as everyone says, we might as well get a World Class CB pairing of Laporte & Koulibaly & have Garcia/THB learn from them.

Would Ake be a massive upgrade on Stones? We didn't concede many goals in the previous 2 seasons, but that's partly down to the better pressing of the team and having more energy in midfield. We're vulnerable from corners & set pieces (offensively & defensively), and having someone who's 5ft11 doesn't seem like enough of an upgrade for what it'd cost.

Unless he's going to grow 5 inches, he's never going to be like Van Dijk.

What makes Van Dijk special is the fact he's technical, rapid and 6'5''. Small technical defenders are not that uncommon.

I like Ake and wouldn't complain if he signed, but he's not the transformative presence that someone like Koulibaly could be, and because Bournemouth have PL money it probably woulnd't be much cheaper.

people are too fast to hit any player coming from smaller PL teams. If he played for Bologna, or even better somewhere in France, Spain or Germany (they're more fancy than Serie A these days), there would be much more positivity.

If we start going for so-called ready-made replacements when there is a crisis it gives every kid in the Academy the simplest of messages - you have to have the talent of Messi or Dave Ewing to get a decent sniff of first team! Garcia in, Ferny up the pitch and we are back to nigh on top protection.

He's special 'cos he's among a mere handful of players who have VAR immunity until LiVARpool have three consecutive titles!

If he was in another league, no one would ever consider us signing a centreback for a team in 15th with almost no international caps and no european experience in 6 years.

Agreed, but every time we play Bournemouth he has never stood out or looked particularly special, indeed we always seem to score easily against them.

I personally would prefer a far bigger, more physical presence at the back to partner Laporte.

Give it a rest, Van Dijk is top quality, he was at Celtic, he was at Southampton and now at Liverpool.

Every time he has stepped up to a better team/league he has improved, always a sign of a quality player.
