Do any of you know the words of 'God save the Queen'?

But we are not China.We are so much more civilised than them.We should have a sporting melody instead of a National anthem.The word National is far too strong and shouldn't be used under any circumstances.

But Jerusalem is thousands of miles away! and it again is a religious bollocks song! This country has a huge Athiest and Secular population (science has shown that religion is bollocks for decades), therefore that should be reflected in it's national anthem!
We also have a sizable minority who think that their religion is "Jedi Knight". Do we have to sing about them too?

Do you know the words to the Dutch national anthem? In there is the line "I will always honour the King of Spain", a line from a national poem written in the days when the Netherlands were ruled from Spain. Thing is, their national anthem survived an 80-year war against the Spanish, and no-one complains about it today. Anthems aren't supposed to be a lyrical expression of the demographic composition of the country set to music, they're supposed to be an outburst of pride at either a national event of significance or something to which other countries associate your country. In France and the USA they sing about the wars which defined their nations (Napoleonic/American Independence respectively). The Austrians sing about cultural heritage, etc etc. We sing about the monarchy because loyalty to the monarchy saved our country from repeated threats and destabilising forces through our history. Screw whether it's characteristic now or not. Without our history, our country isn't worth toffee - our history has defined us for centuries and it's what gives us our pride and self-respect now.

Really not got time to read all the posts, as the wife is giving me the evil eye! I think England should have their own anthem, and from mates I speak to, Jerusalem seems to fit the bill. It should definitely not be God Save the Queen, as that is not England's national anthem.

We are a Nation so it would be a Natiomal song,why as English should we care what others think.The word National is far too strong
The Rugby have their National Anthems so why should we not.
I don't think the Monarch's role has changed that much since the National Anthem was introduced, to be honest. We had a parliament then and we have a parliament now. The Monarch's role changed immeasurably during the reign of Charles 1, which was decades earlier.
The National Anthem we have is a complete dirge of a tune though. It hardly incites passion, does it?
Land of Hope and Glory is the best tune. But then I think of its bombastic nature.
So Jerusalem for me (had it at my wedding. The vicar nearly fainted at the very suggestion).
