If you leave school and don't go onto further education a job or an apprenticeship with a year i'd say a year of this is a good idea.

If you can't manage to do any of the above in a year then chances are you're not up to much so a years old school national service is just what they need. A wage, an education, a roof over their head, 3 meals a day and most likely some life changing life experience.

And a million disaffected kids drilled in firearms. Marvellous.

If you look at it through negative eyes maybe. Positive eyes may say those million kids will learn skills, discipline, respect for others, respect for themselves etc. are there no disaffected kids joining up now?

Dunno about that, the most aggressive blokes showing absolutely no respect for anyone are squaddies on the piss. This whole idea of forcing kids into the services where they will learn respect and come out better people is bullshit.

Not sure i agree with that. Never had any issues with squaddies on the piss personally.

A night out in Colchester or Aldershot may disabuse you of that notion.

I heard that the SAS boys are forbidden to go into Hereford in case they kill a civilian if they get into trouble, such is the quality of their training etc...

Not got a problem with squaddies btw, quite the opposite. Given what they have to do in our name it's entirely understandable that they need to let off a bit of steam from time to time.

I've avoided Colchester and aldershot thus far. Just from personal experience I've never had an issue.

Take my word for it and don't go out of your way!

My point (which I didn't make clear) is that pubs in squaddy towns are renowned for trouble. It's a running joke in towns like that that pub takings are subject to the vagaries of "troop movements". I guess there's a 'hunting in packs' aspect to it, plus the fact that it might be the last time they're going out on the piss in a while (or the first time for a while).

Think it's a good idea. There must be people some here whos parents must have done it. Don't the Isrealis and a few other European countries do it.
Got to be better than mooching around on the dole.

yeah lets send the 'scroungers' to nice warm climates like Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria...........that'll cut the benefits bill

Someones got to do it.I take it you wouldn't

I don't do regime change.....I would however defend my country

How about an idea of offering people a community service job if they havent worked in a year only if they are fit and able to work. if they refuse then dock their benefits.

Before people start... Im not saying this will work and im not saying it for disabled people and single parents etc.

Just an idea.

National Service in the old context is unworkable. They'd never turn up.

A much better concept would be a '3 convictions and you're straight from the cell to the Fracking penal colony' where you frack for free for three.
