Ndombele (signed for Spurs)

PSG have a great mixture of academy kids and bargains mixed in with their big stars. People like Kimpembe, Rabiot, Areola, Diaby & Nkunku all take up big squad roles and yet came from their academy which will be saving them an absolute ton on fees and wages compared to people like Mahrez/Gundogan/Danilo/Bravo for us.

Then there's the cheap players they have - Verratti was only 12m, Choupo-Moting free, Meunier 5m, Bernat 12m.

It's a very different model of team, their marquee players cost much more than anyone we've ever bought, but they back them up with a lot of cheap or academy players because they just don't need a deep squad like we do with Ligue 1 being the level it is.

This is fantastic insight, thanks.

Great post

I think this guy fits the bill but if we baulked at the de jong fee and wage then we ain’t gonna get to his guy either which will be a shame

I think you hit the nail on the head there, did De Jong fit the bill? . A few of us think if we would have bought De Jong our established players would have had to adjust to his weaknesses where as Ndombele has better attributes to support our established players, and as such is more valuable to us

I believe each individual we chase, will have a ceiling cost on them, I am sure we would go big, on the right player. We have let previous targets go, but I can't think "if only" on one of them, Sanchez, Pogba and Jorghino et all.

Sanchez before he went to Barca and Hazaed but in most cases I have thought what an idiot joining this or that club where your not going to fit in

I agree with that, insomuch as DeJong would have been bought as an exceptional talent who gradually learns the Premier League & potentially becomes a 'great' whereas Ndombele is more of an instant firefighter who could possibly prevent catastrophe if Fernandinho was to suddenly lose it.

DeJong is likely to reach a higher level, but isn't there yet, especially physically.

Tbf, I'm not sure a move to the Prem would have been his best option at this stage

Better put than me

Hypothetical.

What price would you consider too high for Ndombele? Because as much as we'd like the club to not over-pay, the rest of these midfielders are going for very high prices.

I would be comfortable if the club went to 85m including add-ons.

Its more wages than fee, seems so for De aJong anyway.

You seroius wudnt pay more than 50mill

Really? We paid almost that much for our defenders last season, and this is a hot talent, in a key position that we are short of cover in. I honestly wouldn’t care how much we paid, if it was the right move for the club. We get slated for over inflating the market, when I believe our transfer policy is sound so we may as well do it.

I am, yeah. This summer we only need to buy for two positions, and this one is the lynchpin of our team in a lot of ways. I'm not a fan of Chillwell and wouldn't look to spend more then 30m or so on the backup leftback. With outgoings that's 100m in spend.

City, or more precisely Mansour and Khaldoon, appear to be explaining to the world that they are not going to be bent over to sustain their money-making machine called CFG. Rather, they are going to simply make certain the main team (Man City) has the resources to maintain the CL position, while winning “titles” (silverware) on a regular basis. That might entail one major purchase per season, as this management team did at Barca, but sustaining the model with extravagant purchases at this point is not in the cards.

Pep wanted a new defence. Khaldoon gave it to him. Pep delivered him a Premier League and a metric shitton of records. They also gave him the high quality producer he needed to give some much needed rotation for (and the kindling necessary to light a fire under) Sterling and Sané.

We know Pep needs a defensive midfielder/centre half who can protect the middle of the park. Sadly, so does the whole fucking world, so they are trying to extort us...clubs, players and agents alike. Pep and Txiki are looking for a certain KIND of player, not just technically and physically, but emotionally and interpersonally. This is why Laporte was worth a revisit...Pep knew he wanted him and knew he had the personality Pep needed.

Look around the squad...not a single malcontent...and if you become one? Buh-bye!

So, the individual needed to be the puzzle piece that fits exactly into Pep’s jigsaw is going to be difficult to both identify and acquire. And, City are in no mood to be trifled with. If we are, then we will go with the young blood we are nurturing. We have enough, and with the supporting cast around them, it might even be the best course of action...unless we find EXACTLY what we want.

That's a lovely, insightful post IMO.

I saw this team in my dream:

Ederson
Walker Stones Laporte Sandro*
Ndombele*
De Bruyne D. Silva
Sterling Aguero Sane
Then:

Bravo
Danilo Kompany Otamendi Mendy
Fernandinho
B. Silva Gundogan
Roberts Jesus Mahrez
With Foden, Muric, Delph, Sandler, Garcia etc playing some part.

As a US contributor [presumably] then you will know more than most the value and importance of a quarterback. OK, this is a different sport but in a soccer sense, Fernandinho is as near as we can get to having a 'quarterback' player in our team, that's just how vital he is to us. The bad news is that there are very few suitable candidates for this role and this shortfall gives rise to a premium price which will have to be paid, if not by City then by someone else. The good news is that there are very few clubs where such a player would happily end up, and beyond a small number of 'obvious' clubs bidding for his services which would number no more than about eight, we might find that there are around a dozen players elsewhere who might fit the bill perfectly for us. Barca, Real and PSG cannot sign everyone so with a bit of research by our management team might lead us to that right player without a challenge from any of our major opponents.
