Yep yep...I think it was Moomba who said earlier in this thread that if being like Benitez meant finishing second, and winning the CL, and a n other cup, he'd take it...me too. In a heartbeat.

lol, now that's funny.

It wasn't meant to be...

I'll add my uneducated opinion to the proceedings and suggest it is probably a bit of both. I think if you listen to Mancini he is obviously a winner and wants to win games. I think the players are guilty of a little complacency going into some games and I think that was evident during Hughes reign as well.

For me we are hard to beat because we have some battlers in the team with a fair amount of ability but we don't yet have a cohesive team. I do not think Hughes ever worked out what he was doing with the team - how he wanted them set up and how to play and we were reliant on good forwards hitting form. We were lucky to have Ade in form, then Craig and them Carlos. I remember lots of goals scored because of fast breaks but not many because of great patient team build up.

Mancini seems to have a plan he's working towards irregardless of formation and is trying to develop a pattern of play that requires greater discipline and team play than the squad is used to. To me there is a lack of cohesion that to an extent is understandable considering the upheavels this season. It astounds me that at times we can be outplayed especially through midfield by teams with nothing like the ability of our squad. I've put this down to teams like Fulham, Stoke etc having a clearer understanding of what their character and style of play is so they can perform to their strengths. The individual players have less licence to freestyle on the pitch but perform to their set patterns of play.

I remember under Sven we struggled to put 2 decent halfs of football together and that same lack of team identity was also evident then. Mancini seems to want to give the players a little less licence to do whatever and instill that team identity into their play. I think the squad may be struggling to understand their roles and how Mancini wants them to play. However I do see that our midfield lacks that driving influence to link defence and attack which has been a long term problem and i think there is sometimes a lack of composure at both full back positions that prohibits the team from being truly effective as mancini wants. Perhaps Mancini needs to be more pragmatic but our options in centre mid seem to be much of a muchness.

Having said all that i wouldnt trade places with anyone else chasing 4 and whilst some performances have been frustrating they don't always warrant the melodrama displayed by some fans
