Neilton, dubbed 'the new Neymar'

Several head in the sand merchants on this thread.

Someone claiming he 'hasn't made a name for himself'

Someone claiming you can only be a name if you are Maradonna or Pele (or from the 'top echelons' of football whatever the fuck that means).

The facts for you:

1. Is a current Brazil international scoring 24 goals in 39 appearances

2. Has represented Brazil at every age level since the U17s.

3. Is Barcelona's (yes that's Barcelona) big name signing this summer. Neymar's transfer fee was €57 million (£48.6m) (making him the 9th overall highest transfer of all time) and his release clause was set at €190 million.

4. At the age of 19, Neymar won the 2011 South American Footballer of the Year award, after coming third in 2010

5. In 2011 Neymar received nominations for the FIFA Ballon d'Or, where he came 10th, and the FIFA Puskás Award, which he won

6. He was the top scorer of the 2011 South American Youth Championship with nine goals, including two in the final, in the 6–0 win against Uruguay, helping Brazil to win their 11th title in the competition.

7. Won the FIFA Confederations Cup Bronze Shoe this year

8, Was selected for the FIFA Confederations Cup Dream Team this year.

You're right he's done fuck all, the big clubs aren't interested and he definitely hasn't made a name for himself.

Clutching at straws with a lot of those facts.

Confeds cup and youth championships. If I asked you to name the last winner of the golden shoe at the last confeds you would have to google it

Hahahhahahaha!

And that is meant to convince us that he has achieved the highest standard?!?

Is it even possible to 'clutch at straws' when using actual facts?

Ok you don't like some of the 8 bits of info I gave, but the first 3 alone should be enough to convince any sensible person that he's a very good player and is a 'name'.

The fact that Barca value his release clause at 190m 100% confirms he 'has made a name for himself'.

That's nearly four times the release clause value of the current big 'name' Cavani and 110m more than Ronaldo cost Madrid.

Explain that one.

No one is doubting that he's a good player and one who could become great. Just to be when a player is dubbed the new xxxxx that xxxxx is usually someone who has achieved a lot more and proven themselves over a prolonged period.

Im not arsed about 'convincing' you but to answer your question - firstly we were discussing him 'making a name for himself'. not about him 'achieving at the highest level'. I'm not sure you realise they are different things.

However, just to indulge you, if you dont think scoring 24 in 39 for Brazil, playing for them since 16 years of age, winning every award going in his own country, coming 10th in the Ballon D'or, and being selected as their biggest signing of the season by Barcelona is achieving a high standard I'm sure there is nothing else we need to say to each other.

Ever.

Yes, hence the word 'new' you've just used..

However if you actually think Neymar is 'new' you're even more delusional than you appear. He was on the verge of signing for Madrid some 7 years ago as a 14 year old having impressed in youth trials. He has been representing Brazil for 5 years at various levels.

He isn't 'new'.

Any player worth his salt proves themselves in Europe. He's new to Europe. He's 21. Name me a player in the last 20 years to be considered one of the worlds best who didnt prove themselves in Europe. Actually anyone since pele.

Also look at the other people that players are often referred to as the new version. Zidane, Viera, Maradonna, Pele etc etc. if you think Neymar is in that category already you are more delusional than you appear.

Neymar hasn't even made a proper name for himself yet and there's talk of a "new Neymar".

Barca's big summer signing. Ran the Confeds.

Hasn't 'made a proper name for himself yet'.

Not really no. Has the ability to become a great but he is hardly up there with Pele and Maradona in the echelons of footballing gods

Only players to score over 100 goals before turning 20 -
Pele
Messi
L. Ronaldo
Neymar

Not in bad company.

So now you're putting forward that for any player to be 'worth his salt' he has to have 'proved' himself in Europe?

By this I take it you mean the CL?

By this reckoning there are hardly any players in our current squad (a squad full of internationals and premier league winners) who aren't 'worth their salt'.

Jesper Blomqvist, Ronny Johnsen and Nicky Butt must be 'worth their salt' and must have 'made a name for themselves' being the Champions League winners they are (all 3 played in the 1999 final).

Nicky Butt has made more of a name for himself than Neymar.

Put your spade back in the shed mate.
