Kane kicked the spherical object. The defender, not being in the correct position, attempted to stop the shot in the only way he could. Stretching with his studs showing, throwing his weight behind a bad challenge.
Anyway, it was a pen.

No problem with different interpretations (though you are still ignoring the point that Kane kicked him) but am sure we can agree it wasn’t a clear and obvious error so no role for VAR
