Neville/Giggs's plans for Manchester city centre.

I wonder what was on the site of the town hall before that was built? Probably some lovely, slightly smaller scale old fashioned buildings.
Probably some horrible diseased looking shanty shacks, that's usually what got targeted when they were looking for Lebensraum in those days.

I feel sorry for the folk who were turfed out of the muddy puddle to make way for the greedy shanty-shack developers...

There is already a synagogue there which they are knocking down as part of the wrecking ball development so are having to provide a replacement. They are also demolishing the Abercromby pub which has long been a historic drinking hole and the old Bootle St police station which would make for a great refurbishment.
The design, character, height and size is so out of place in this particular location. The last time there was this amount of demolition in central Manchester was during the blitz! Most Cities fight tooth and nail to hold onto their historic centres, not here, one little sniff of money and our city fathers are scrambling to sell their souls.

So you have not been to spinningfields then mate.

The development is hiddious, they have already changed the towers colours from black to bronze as they thought it would appease people, but it is still shite.

On the abercrombe, I don't drink there much anymore (rag pub) but historically it is the site where the injured and dead of the Peterloo Masacre were taken and so has major Mancunian historical importance, but as our council won't even confirm a permamemt monument to one of Manchesters most important historical events anyway, doubt they care about knocking down the boozer.
The Synagogue also has historic importance as the oldest of that style in the uk.

Bootle street is a big area and could easily be renovated into something modern using the present building the courtyard is easy to accomodate cafes/bars/shopping and the pub and symagogue refurbed? you also have the theatre royale over the road sitting idle for 20 years, these historic buildings could still be usefull as is with some imagination.
Knocking down and building eyesores is not necessarly the better option.

"Ex-footballers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs's £200m plans to redevelop part of central Manchester would "erase" the area's history, campaigners warned."

Seeing as the rags are always telling us we have no history I guess it makes sense to get rid of it.

The Arndale Centre destroyed more of Manchester rhan the blitz. I like these plans, the area round there is scruffy.

Looks like it's going to part of wider area of high rise development. The fella who built the Beetham tower has plans for four more south of Deansgate station.

Personally I think more people living in the city is a good thing it generates wealth for pubs shops and restaurants etc. There is so much building going on in the city at the moment. A good mix is what is needed. Conversion of Mills like Albion mixed with more modern stuff to the east of piccalilly i think works quite well. But it needs big investment to put in infrastructure like cycle and walkways and maintained green spaces. Too often it seems to me its those bits that seem to get overlooked in Manchester. All that said those two blocks aren't great to look at.
