Apologies to Jonathan Wilson, for the blatant plagiarism in the title.

The Sun, the last great bastion of morality in this country, described the email as “sickening” and “vile”. Presumably they draw the line at hacking into the mobile phone of a murdered teenage girl.

Class. Hope the fuckers read this.

Wasn't that the News of the World?

They're both owned by the same group.

Great blog Ric :-)

It appeared to me that Cook was chiding Marwood

Really did not expect to read this.

Amazing!
But he's right. We've all fallen into trap of agreeing with the "vile" description peddled by The Sun. But it isn't. Full stop. At the very worst it's maybe a bit ill-judged.

It's like a politician getting all het up about something the other party has said or done that only about 25 other people know what it is and even fewer care about.

Peter Greenaway surely?

Anyway, good article.

It's not vile and it is something I can well imagine saying myself (although, granted, I'd be mortified if such comments were broadcast to the person involved or the wider public).

I am not offended that the bloke would think or say such a thing.

But that isn't the point. Making a cock up and a big mistake is. And it becomes a much bigger and important cock up if he has then compounded hugely it by showing the appalling judgement that would lead someone in such a position to lie about it - but that's still speculation at the moment.

However, one thing that I would stake my life on is that the email is not in any way critical of Marwood. I cannot get my head around how anyone of average intelligence or above would even begin to think that it is. Now, reading that back, it sounds hugely pompous. It's not meant to be but I am genuinely incredulous as to how someone reads that email and, knowing the context of the previous email, comes to the conclusion that it is critical of Marwood.

In fact, by Cook's own admission, it is obviously mocking the language she has used, otherwise why apologise for the content and why, true or not, pin it on a malicious hacker, up to no good. Would such a hacker be logging into his email in order to tell Marwood to pull his finger out? Or, if the hacker didn't exist, would Cook go to such lengths to invent such a person and a club investigation in order to excuse a poorly worded instruction to Marwood, telling him to do the woman a favour and get moving? Of course he wouldn't.

One thing I am certain of. No club investigation is going to conclude that that email was intended to be in anyway critical of Marwood. It would be laughed out of town. And I can't see how people can see it that way unless they want to see it that way.

I have never read such pompous twaddle in my life. I have a Master's degree so regard myself as slightly above average intelligence, yet it seems clear to me that Cook is definitely chiding Marwood in the mail. I have no axe to grind as I know Jack shit about either individual, but the evidence is plain to see. Just try opening your eyes.

What?

So what's the 'story' here then?

Man sends email to colleague imploring him to take sympathetic action favouring woman with cancer and then totally loses his mind when that email falls into her hands and for some bizarre reason sees his concern as something that requires grovelling apologies and refers to it as in terms of 'hurt and embarrassment'?

Are we honestly saying that Cook's apology was because she saw an email of his that wasn't in correct, business like language and not due to the fact that she would have found content and meaning offensive as it was mocking her?

I know it sounds pompous. I acknowledged that. But I am genuinely incredulous about these alternative 'critical of Marwood' interpretations. I'm not going to lie about it. I am genuinely amazed, whether I am right or wrong.

You are right and his masters degree is in home economics.

Both as guilty as each other.
