New Laptop Advice?

get an Acer, great machines and you don't pay extra just for the brand as you will with any apple product and with sony as well.

if you've still not bought anything yet and a Windows O/S is your platform I'd go with anything by Dell, and buy one online from their outlet store to save up to a third on their published prices.

I'm still using a Latitude I bought from them three years ago (it had a 3 year warranty - I'm not sure why, I didn't ask or pay anything extra to get this) and I've already had two new power supplies, a new LED screen, a new top + keyboard and two new bottoms (I didn't ask for the second, but they sent it anyway) so all in all apart from the motherboard I've virtually got a new computer again... they have excellent customer service and I've been buying Dell for nine years. Solid kit - and I literally destroy computers.

I wouldn't buy anything else, and this last support and everything I've received from them without quibble has only reinforced my positive outlook.

* and usually I do my own work on these things for speed, hence if there's a problem they'll ship me out the parts, although one time I did send it in to them and they shipped it back to me (free) after installing a good few hundred quid of stuff on it at no charge.

- not quite as good as winning 6-1, but very nearly!

;o)

Love my MacBook.
Dead easy to sync to iTunes, quick to boot up,
no virus issues, no Windows!

Agree.....go for a Mac.........more expensive but much better
I'd usually wade into this argument from a completely uneducated point of view but having used my mate's Macbook Pro for a few days I can definitely confirm that they are utterly dogshit. A PC/laptop with Windows 7 is a million times better. And half the price.

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.

That said, they are definitely a lot better than anything running Windows 95.

Judging by the list of replaced parts (and not just yours either) that's exactly why I would never, ever recommend a Dell, unless you're desperate.

That said, they are cheap and they come with a 3 year warranty and their customer service is excellent ;-)

Umm, if dells were as solid as you claim, you wouldn't have needed all that shit that they've replaced on your laptop. I've certainly not experienced any good service as a private customer from dell and wouldn't purchase anything from them again.
Perhaps this has something to do with our different locations though.

to the previous posters, I'm someone who drives a hard bargain and knows how to play the angles..

I've bought bunches of computers over the years.

I've even spent a little time inside of a manufacturer where I took liberal use of being on their production floor with access to their designers and technicians who told me a few things about certain makers and dodgy 'less than reliable' cheaply-sourced components (and the ramifications of such), learned about computer burn-ins and the like.

In my university days I helped set-up and operate a computer liquidating company after I made an advantageous deal with the owner (he made me a job offer to go work for him after I went back with my mate to buy more computers from him) who was a serial entrepreneur and had his fingers in numerous pies.

Dell make quality kit, and as someone who has bought Dell over nine years - not returning to any other maker (and I've bought and used some of the other big makers) there is no other option for me. I've had four of them. If they were cheap and poorly designed pieces of shit I'd have bought one and not gone back.

I destroy kit, I travel a lot, and am harder than Nigel De Jong on a keyboard, let alone Chuck Norris.

(and you might have guessed, if I got my LED screen swapped out, along with a few other components, it might have a little more to do with my negotiating prowess and the ease of 'working' with the Dell people and their solid stand-behind products than on any failings or piss-poor design/quality)

-- Thu Nov 24, 2011 1:02 am --

I'll make you a concession, I don't buy their personal notebooks - only their business spec units; there is a difference there, and I'm not into playing games or stuff, I want a lightweight but sturdy machine with a decent keyboard. Dell business notebooks do it for me unlike any others. Their consumer lines may not be comparable - as any company will make a range of kit for a range of customers.

You can get some pretty beefy fujitsu laptops for a great price, they may not be very nice to look up but they're pretty powerful and solidly built. I'd stay away from Toshiba and HP them things fall apart in under a year or so. Heard the same can't Acer but can't say for sure as I've never owned one.
