Our old one had a bit of colour which made it better than the current NYC one. I voted for it only because the other was awful but it's dull IMO.

No. That's a hawk / falcon (Hawk of Quraish) not an eagle, and our Golden Eagle has NOTHING to do with the takeover anyway and is meant to reflect the XX Legion (2000 years ago) and Barclays is a Black Eagle and has been an eagle since the early 1700's (though they've modernized the design to fit-in with modern mans vague self-image)

I think the Eagle came from an old and discarded Manchester coat of arms or similar but I think it was Tolmie who once said the Eagle caught the attention of our owners when they were looking at buying a club. Who knows whether our badge played any role in the acquisition but I think the owners and Etihad will want to keep the Eagle.

The Eagle is supposed to represent a Golden Eagle (adopted by republican Rome for religious reasons then transformed into the imperial emblem) because elements of the XX Legion Valeria Victrix were stationed in what is now Castefields, and fortifications and their imperial and particular emblems etc. were discovered there. It is not a phoenix and it is not a hawk and it is not just any old eagle. I still think it's shit though.

When the design was revealed everyone said WTF? And that was the story behind the design. Some lady archaeologist was interviewed and there were pics of excavations and so on. It seemed tenuous to me then, and hasn't improved with age imo. The fact that hardly anyone gets it seems to me to be clear and convincing evidence it has failed of its essential purpose, i.e. to root Manchester (City) in "history".

I'm sure I've read somewhere something from Gary James about the rags actually using the eagle before us
