We're thinking of a trip the last week of October (half term) for a couple of nights. The first site I've checked for packages is British Airways which I expected to be top end and wasn't disappointed, anything from £1500 per person all in. Can any of you cosmopolitan types point me in the direction of where we might get total cost down to a grand?

Is October a good time to go? Is there a bad time?

Virgin used to do decent deals?

Jet 2 (!) have also started to do autumn trips to New York but very limited dates at present.

Just been to New York on honeymoon - amazing, you won't be disappointed.

Try KLM, cheapish but often with a mainland Europe stop thrown in (which adds onto your travel time)

Don't wanna rain on your parade, but you're gonna struggle to get something at a competitive rate this close to departure (and wanting to travel during a school holiday!)

Hotels are notoriously expensive at the best of times, and NY as a destination rarely favours booking late. For flights, booking as far as advance as possible will usually ease the pressure on the wallet.

FWIW, there are returns for £491 from Gatwick with Air Europa. Couldn't see much for under £600 from Manchester.

Dunno much about the place, however I will start spreading the news that your leaving someday...

Might have spoken too soon.....

Last full week of October, there are Manchester returns for £400 with Air Canada, Tues 21st to Sat 25th. If it's the following week, cheap flights are slim pickings.
