i stayed right around times square. a real tourist trap, and i recommend to get the best food to go a few blocks off the beaten path. my favourite part of new york was when me and my friend walked from times square to queens. we ate pizza at both grimaldis and lombardis... i forget which one we did that day. if you can, go to both. lombardis pizza is amazing and worth the taste. from my understanding its the oldest pizzeria in north america.

shopping wise i cant suggest much but century 21 mall downtown manhattan is great cheap shopping.

Purchase a New York pass - awesome value and covers the must see things.Book the sail ship around the harbour and maybe the helicopter ride.I also saw Phantom which was incredible.

My favourite meal was in a place called Waxy O Grady's.

I stayed at the Novotel last time and it was superb, very clean, great amenities and a good location.

stayed at a B&B which turned out to be in the bronx
it was fucking ace and a third of the price of some shitty hotel

I can fully recommend the Moderne Hotel (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.modernehotelnyc.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.modernehotelnyc.com</a>), 2 blocks from central park, 5 minute walk from Times Sq. Really really nice staff, dead helpful to us (I'd never been before), our room was on the ground floor so no view, but considering where it was, it was quiet at night.

EDIT: Also, Island Burgers & Shakes: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.islandburgersandshakes.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.islandburgersandshakes.com/</a>
Ellen's Stardust Diner (singing waitresses!) : <a class="postlink" href="http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/</a>
Cosmic Diner (nearly died after breakfast here): <a class="postlink" href="http://www.newcosmicdiner.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.newcosmicdiner.com/</a>

We stayed at the Novotel as well just above time square. Great location and clean tidy room. Not that we spend much time there.

Had a great night out in the meat packing district, the only place we really found with decent nightlife. Did the Statton Island Ferry to see the statue of liberty, rackafella centre rather than the empire state. Such an amazing city. My wife went back last year and they did a food tour around little italy, said it was absolutely fantastic.

Generally if your trip doesn't include a Saturday night in New York you will end up paying a lot more. Fairly easy gimmick to get people to stay in New York over the weekend, but it works. If your dates don't include you staying over on a Saturday night you might find the price drops if you change them so you do.

Oh, and watch out for taxes if you haven't been to the US before. You want to buy a pair of jeans and the label says $30. At the till they add on taxes so you end up paying 5-10% more. It constantly annoys me.

It's sort of like tipping the City.
