Gun laws are extraordinarily lax in NZ, anyone over 18 and without a criminal record can get a license for semi automatic rifles and individual guns don't need to be registered.

Well luckily that’s not Ric’s position and the killer’s politics and reasoning for this cowardly acting of barbaric terrorism are actually fairly important.

Just as there is a huge problem with the rise of Islamist extremist groups and their acts of terror, there is a worrying rise on the other end of the scale like today and Brevik et al. If the general populace are not informed, educated and careful on the matter then we (the world, not you and I) could sleepwalk into a global race war if a tit for tat escalation of extreme terrorist atrocities continue.

I tend to think rational discussion of the matter to be more important than 3 pages of ‘RIP’ for people that will never see it. And how many times could the sentence “that’s horrendous, those poor people” be typed before the thread became pointless?

The hard core pro gun cunts in the states use the same argument for obstructing meaningful discussions when they have massacres over there. It is always too soon or not the time and place or disrespectful to discuss the politics when someone has been on the rampage. It is often quite a cynical ploy IMO (not accusing FantasyIreland of anything remotely cynical BTW, I don't agree with his stance but have no doubt it came from a good place). The reality is that now is exactly the time for people to discuss how this kind of thing comes about because sadly in a few weeks time, people will be relatively disinterested. I tried to have the discussion with my son this morning who, if I am being honest, has a leaning to the right that I am not comfortable with. I often try to talk to him about at least trying to display some critical thinking but on a day like today when he is genuinely shocked by something he's seen, IMO it is the time to have the discussion about what fuels this shit and try to make him realise that it is important not to even be a small part of the problem.

What I find interesting here is the continued references to "right wing", by which you really mean the majority white, working class, trump voting class in the west - and to distinguish between right wing and Islamic terrorism.

Because, Islam itself is a right wing, supremacist and fascist political ideology, far more so than anything those "right wing" whites could ever dream up.
In every way - mindset towards "other" people (and especially Jews or other non believers), women, gays, or propensity towards violence and political suppression of those others.

That’s a great point. There are very few things more right wing and conservative (small C) than Islam.
