Newcastle (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

I have to agree with many of the opinions expressed on here. Eddie's distribution, especially in the first half, took me back to some of Joe Hart's days when he seemed determined to blow the head off a fan in the fifth row! And watching KdB misplace the simplest of passes, but what was really sad was seeing his look of resigned acceptance when he did. I can only hope that Pep was right in claiming that he isn't recovered fully from an illness. But we deserved our victory and MotD was wide of the mark in suggesting that we were lucky to get a point. Newcastle did have their chances but we see comparable chances missed every week and none of them were exactly "on a plate". The only period which was at all worrying for us was the ten minutes or so before our second goal. The geordies did seem to have greater energy and seemed likely to take control but with Bernardo we upped the tempo and hit them at a psychologically important juncture. From then on we were comfortable.

It's important to remember that for all the talk we heard about their difficulties scoring Newcastle don't concede many and they certainly don't lose very often so this was always going to be a tight match. We dominated the first half and very much had the upper hand in the second apart from a short spell so I think we can be reasonably well satisfied. The concern about one or two of our players declining is real and I think we'll see something of a rebuild this summer and we'll remain the PL's top club for some time yet. At least I hope so.

From up in SS3 we played much more narrow than usual I'd guess that's why our passing was iffy.....Eddie's kicking was another thing maybe a sore shin from the midweek game.

Anyway job done, had they taken that big chance at 1-0 in the second half it would have been much harder.

In the end a 2-0 win and a week off.

The same downer they had on Ake but he is the best thing sliced bread now amazing what a seasons coaching from Pep does
I have always rated Ake and was pleased when we signed him. Had injuries to contend with and a lack of run of games.
Now at a point where I’m looking for his name on the team sheet.
Grealish is also showing up to his huge price tag.Still think £100m was too much at the time but May very well end up being a great bit of business.
Phil back to being Phil too.

Just a comment on Eddie’s wayward distribution. Quite often the out ball was wide and long to Phil who would probably have been clattered by Dan Burn. In some ways, it was better that a few of those balls went into touch rather than having Phil clattered by Burn.

It’s very unusual for Eddie to be so wayward

Think we got away with one, yesterday. The Geordies were cutting us apart at times and, if they'd had their scoring boots on, we'd have had another very frustrating weekend. Still, if me grandad had shaved his legs...

Three points, clean sheet (somehow) and no injuries. Next.
Agree mate, they had some great opportunites to score. Need to keep the tempo going.

With eddies distribution at the moment, which usually is his saving grace, would it not be worth trialling ortega for a few prem games. Even if it’s just to give eddie a kick up the backside and a reminder he’s not untouchable. I mean ortegas distribution against arsenal in the cup and Bristol was fantastic- he was competent with his feet anyway and has most likely got better at city. Plus, his stop shooting ability statistically is a lot better than edersons.

Honestly mate, I don’t buy it. No matter how much I read about “limbs” at fortress Highbury etc etc, that game won’t matter one jot when they come to play at our place in April. It’ll be water under the bridge by then.

Their players know we’ve beaten them home and away this season; a later winner yesterday won’t erase that.
Their results against Villa and Bournemouth were huge, games the old flakey Arsenal would have lost.

It's very much theirs to lose.
