Newcastle (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Simple solution to me is move Kev out wide and Phil in the 10 role, the crosses he can provide out wide will create loads for Haaland. Inverted wingers don’t have the same deliveries and not as threatening to me.

It's crying out for Kev to move to the wide right now.

Give Phil his opportunity in the ten (and his workrate) and there will be some serious directness and opportunity for Haaland.

Bernie sat alongside Rodri and bring Gundo and Mahrez off the bench.

Stones alongside Dias and think we win the lot.

It's about helping Kev to work smarter, not harder.

He can can still shift enough in the final third and cover Walker.

Agree and it’s weird pep not played him there! What’s worrying for me is reports this morning about foden a ankle playing up again and rest hopefully will be enough, at just 22 and having this problem is not good! Wonder if needs an operation on it or something!? It’s a big worry for me..

KDB is very much the elephant in the room.

A once magnificent player but for me a player that now has magnificent moments.

Pep will have to really earn his money with this one, a huge decision on where does he play in the team or incredibly, does he play in the team?

Personally I think your harsh on Akanji, he's been a very good signing and without him our season would have been up shit creek without a paddle.

Is he a first team regular? NO but he is a superb member of the squad and let's be honest, he's 5th choice CB.

Amazed that Foden does not have issues with his neck! the way he looks in the opposite direction to where he is passing or shooting is unreal and an incredible attribute to have.

Can't agree mate. I see a defender who is afraid to get hurt, which is always a worry.

The left-back issue and injuries to Stones and Dias this season has simply created the window for him to cover, and he's cover at best.

Ake would have obviously played the left side of the central pairing if we had had a left-back to speak of or Cancelo hadn't bombed.

Akanji seems a decent enough guy but he's responsible for some very porous holes, whether they lead to goals or not.

Agreed on Kev, have felt this way for quite a while about his downturn. He's in need of a good rest and reboot in a different position if he is going to justify starts in the future in a revamped City middle.

It doesn’t help his case that’s there somewhat of a group of decent holding midfielders in the league at present.

That’s why I think wide right is where we would see the best from him, not as many good left backs.

KDB wasn’t his best but I’d rather see them killer passes again as opposed to Side to side football
The side to side passes is to protect our ageing legs, we simply can't press like we once did, and KDB is one of the culprits.

I think a good finish to the season and we'll be able to sell Akanji on for £30m to someone in the league. He came in, did a great job when we had a pile of injuries and a hectic world cup year, but he's 5th choice and I'd expect him to want to start somewhere at his age and ability.

Think we got away with one, yesterday. The Geordies were cutting us apart at times and, if they'd had their scoring boots on, we'd have had another very frustrating weekend. Still, if me grandad had shaved his legs...

Three points, clean sheet (somehow) and no injuries. Next.
And if we put away our chances we would have been out of sight

I was really impressed by Akanji initially, as we all were. His performance in the derby at home was brilliant. Quick enough to deal with the counter, calm in possession. Looked like we had a gem. But he's been off it recently without a doubt. Physically he's weak. He doesn't win anything in the air which is a surprise considering his size. And Dias, Ake and Ederson had to bail him out far too often against Newcastle. The way Isak turned him was unforgivable at this level. He should be seeing the danger out there, but he got turned with ease and then made no effort to get back. Good job Sir John is back. Clearly Pep likes Dias at LCB Laporte must wonder what he has to do to get in this side, because he's always much more solid than Akanji but obviously just doesn't fit the defensive shape as well - surely off in the summer?

I don't think Kev works at RW. He's not disciplined enough defensively at the moment, and being in a more fixed position makes him easier to mark. He's best getting a pocket on the right thanks to a triangle with the RW/RB. He's just not on it at the moment. I think, having carried Belgium and now having Haaland he feels a real pressure to make something happen. He needs to spend some time watching Haaland's movement and realising he doesn't need to carry the ball 40 yards before releasing it (by which time he tends to be blowing or under pressure). Just take a simple touch to get it out of your feet and then look to play it into the space, Haaland will get there. And then Kev's in a position to do defensive work should it not come off. He's trying to force things too much at the moment and clearly is pissed off with how shit he's performing and getting frustrated. That was one of the worst performances he's put in for us but in his defence it's because he just kept trying the difficult ball because he knows he can do it. He'll get his form back, but he shouldn't be in the team at the moment.

Fucking hell, match of the day made it out like we'd have been lucky to draw yesterday, never mind win

I thought we were very comfortable other than that 5-10 minutes after they made 3 subs
Im thinking, fk em all, let the results show meeja up for who they are...
