Newcastle post match thread

Calling it before the Crystal Palace pre-match thread, on the first page at least two people will mention the words "banana skin" in their post.

Thought we were sloppy and wasteful today. Nearly the architects of our own downfall at times but in truth we were still worthy winners and 15 points clear.

Mind the gap.

Heard Newcastle airport is closed by the weather, anyone know how the team are getting home? (and don't say flying anyway.)

Zaha does have a bit of quality though ;) - he can make teams pay.

You can live in hope!- And I agree he might just create something - but he will need to take the one chance he gets. Some would say that Kane also has the quality to make us pay - but a fortnight ago he hardly got a sniff. The point is if you don't have the ball - you cant score.

What a weird game. Newcastle’s tactics were the most negative I think I’ve ever seen. Not only the 10 men behind the ball throughout the whole game, but unlike the other teams that’ve done that this season, they weren’t even interested in trying to grab something on the break for the first 80 minutes. So poor with just no clue how to string 3 passes together. How we only scored 1 is beyond me. And yet, we played into their hands in the last 10 minutes and nearly slipped up.

Ultra professional.

Encapsulated by Otamendi’s headed clearance.

They are truly valuing a clean sheet, even when, in all reality, it wouldn’t really matter if we conceded.

That’s hardwired, programmed, professionalism and that will reap rewards in the biggest games where it really does matter.

This group can win any competition they put their mind to.

Saw Inter do it under Maureen at the Nou Camp in 2010, but they were protecting a 3-1 lead at least.

First time ever that Reidy's been the best looking bloke on a 4 man panel.

I preferred the pre-match chat though...

Watch Yorke squirm.

York squirming like fcuk because he is on the scum payroll and can’t say anything negative about his boring team! What’s the point if him on these shows he is fcuking useless.

How many times last season did we see this team absolutely dominate the opposition and drop two and sometimes three points?

I’m still absolutely buzzing to be honest. Love the fact that this team has found a way to win in all circumstances. We win beautiful, we win ugly - we win. And if the opposition doesn’t particularly want to play football, the quality of the match is largely on their heads. I really don’t care. What beauty there was in this match came almost entirely from us. Our goal was a thing of beauty, by the way. In a different way, Otamendi’s headed clearance was a thing of beauty. In previous years, I think we would have conceded at that point. But this team is tough. This team refuses to be beaten.
Personally, I wouldn’t criticize any of our players. Not Kun, not Ilkay, not Bernado. Not Gabi Jesus. They all ran their socks off, they all tried different things. You try getting past a team that has all eleven players not merely in its own half, but often in its own box. You just try it.
A great team performance. We march on.
Rag fan in the pub where I watched it said at the end that he couldn’t see anyone getting near us, and that we would go the season without being beaten. Of course, I wasn’t having it, not publicly, at any rate. But even if I can scarcely admit it to myself, I am starting, faintly, to believe that this thing is possible.

We've had teams park the bus, but that was ridiculous, Newcastle had no intention of attacking in the first half and we created chance after chance were previously we couldn't break through. We created plenty of chances. The post twice, a couple of good saves and some poor finishing the only reason we didn't win by a greater score, it's 3 points - 15 points ahead and +22 goal difference is frankly amazing at this point of the season.

Unfortunate that Kompany went off injured, but full confidence in Oti and Mangala and Stones will be back soon. On to Palace with hopefully Delph and Spanish Dave back on Sunday for win 19
Or even Saturday

I was watching the game with a Liverpool fan, and he was just moaning about it being boring,
Bloody hell that’s rich. In the dippers, 70’s & 80’s, heyday, the football league was eventually forced to ban the intentional pass back to the goalkeeper because of Liverpool’s blatant perpetual use of it as a time wasting tactic once they’d gone ahead (No matter how early that happened to be)
