Newcastle Thread - 2023/24

I thought that our first half performance the other night was as embarrassing as anything I’ve seen for a long time and I still don’t know how we went in level at half time. I didn’t think for one minute that Howe would change the entire 10 outfield players and brought in 10 players who have never played together in a competitive match. Our game was saved by bringing on Bruno and Gordon who could have replaced any of the 10 outfield players as we were so passive and let the game simply drift past us.

I think we were the better team in the second half but not to the extent that I would say we were the better team on the night. What I will say is that I’m glad we’ve got that monkey off our backs which didn’t look possible for large parts of the game. Hopefully we can take some confidence from the win because we need to have a bit more faith that we can have a go at the top teams.

Playing the next round of the cup at home would have given us a great chance of progressing to the next round, playing away will make it tougher but we have enough to still get through and that will largely depend on who plays for us.

The teams we’ve drawn so far this season in cups are: Dortmund, Milan, PSG, Man City and Man U. It started off with us playing in the group of death and it appears that it’s turning into the season of death in the cups. We just need to get Liverpool or Arsenal next to cap it off. We still have the FA Cup to get one of those out of the way if we don’t progress any further in the Carabao.

I'm not worried about the draw, that might change when I see the team that we put out on the night.

On the walk back to my Travelodge I noticed how much families attended the game.
A huge proportion of Newcastle fans seemed to be in the 5 to 15 age bracket with their parents.
All bodes well for them supporter wise in the future.
I also noticed that all the night clubs were heaving outside with queues to get in in all.Mostly female.
One of the clubs the dress code seemed to be football tops from all over the world,the rest seem to be bra tops with dress,shorts and Jeans.

Jackets only come out once the temperature drops to -20C. Joking aside, I would much rather be cool outside for a while than sweating inside for hours. You don't really need a jacket in Newcastle but you sometimes do down at the coast on a night out.

I've been out with just a shirt when snow has been driving in off the North Sea and it can be quite cold, especially when you have to queue outside on the sea front more 15 or 20 minutes just to get into a pub.

Still not convinced with their current squad and manager that they will win a major trophy but who knows. Last night was a free hit. Interesting to see them with the pressure on.

Hopefully our players have learned something from last season, they do seem to have a bit of determination about them and a regret that they didn't win the Carabao Cup.

Only time will tell, everybody within the club is together and even players who have historically under-performed have put shifts in recently. We’re some way off competing at the top, we’ll get there, eventually. I doubt we’ll get to your level but no other club can so at least we can compete with the rest and that will give us a fighting chance, something we haven’t had for a long time.

You are slightly ahead of the Hughes era, probably because Howe is a better manager, but Howe`s fate is the same for the same reasons, good luck with the cup if it were a level playing field you would not need it, but the FA have built a huge amount of grey areas over the years, and unless utd implode they will use every one.

I didn't think it would bother anybody as it's not being used to put you down. Some of our fans get annoyed at not getting called Newcastle United and it doesn't bother me and I've always referred to us as Newcastle.

Manchester works for us too :)

It's just a bit of a sore point with fans of a certain age because we were always Manchester City or just City, but the club itself has embraced Man City and left Manchester to United. This riles because, as you know, they aren't even in historic Manchester. Anyway don't let it bother you. :)

Man city I have never liked much and don't know many blues that use it, normaly just say City for the club and refer to themselves as a blue or bert

but we are middle aged fuckers tbf
