Newcastle Thread - 2023/24

It's indicative to look at how others react to the threat of a new team on the block, IE bankrolled to becoming a major rival.

When 'nited were winning things, in the distant past, as a fanbase we probably cheered on arsenal and liverpool pure to spoil the rags' hegemony.

Similarly when roman's chelsea came along we were happy that there was another contender.

Our takeover has been the stuff of dreams, I never thought I'd live to see the day we got to a Cup Final, let alone being Champions and now the best team on the planet.

When the Saudis were linked with Newcastle, I said good luck to them. Bring it on, top competition makes us a better team.

FFP is unsustainable, as a lot are now beginning to see, even if it is through the prism of red shirt neediness.

i hated it when Chelsk won everything simply by smashing the salary spend and trf mkt... we had no chance then = that's not sport. Professional sport in this country has always been a bit sh*t really (particularly football) and that's why we saw the Meridith scandal even as far back as the 1900's ....that's why when the American's professionalised their sport years later they looked at the British model, thought fk that, lets try and make it a bit fairer with a draft system and salary cap. Their Franchise system is shit as it means the select number of clubs always play - the lack of a pyramid structure makes their pro sport a bit sh*t but they were right re their version of FFP

Wouldn't say that their version of finance is right, their 'franchise' model ensures the owners make alot of money....or maybe I got it wrong, and the Glaziers, who run their club that way, are really popular?

Their Franchise version is sht..no passion - link to the community..Cleeveland Browns! passionate dog pound crowd...closest they've had to a football crowd.. Franchise up sticks and fked off!! What a crock of shit..only thing they have right is salary cap and draft - which is another way to try and spread success

Professional football since 1880's is as shit as F1 = richest wins - always has been. Leicester won but really, you can hardly call them paupers compared to rest of 72 + pro clubs

You say that but if it was a real wild west Saudi wealth is at least 10 x greater than Abu Dhabi - we would have been out bid and out spent by them every time

I know salaries are high/ridiculous or whatever word a person may use, but it's not the only profession, imo Hollywood film actors are more 'overpaid' for what they do.....but I bet you would kick off if your job introduced a cap, and you were limited to what you could earn?

depends really..on what the cap is...NFL NBA seem happy enough..im not saying £25,000 a year ids the cap - could be £250m as long as it all ends up equal...that's what a cap is for

A salary cap was only brought into the NFL in 1994.

FFP certainly does not help Newcastle but I don't think it places an insuperable barrier in their way. It is not true to say that FFP forbids owner investment. It places severe limits on what an owner can invest in player transfer fees and wages but it allows unlimited investment in infrastructure, youth development and women's football. Even the cartel realised that a blanket ban on investment was something they could not get away with. Investment in these areas is not something most clubs can consider, at least not on a scale to worry the cartel, but City can, as present plans show clearly. And I think Newcastle can. This is the way to increase revenue from "permissible streams." and this is the essential way to progress. Newcastle are, at present, the one club which can follow City's pathway to stuffing the cartel.

Newcastle United is a genuinely regional power in football. There isn't really too many clubs to compete with Newcastle over a large area and the support, both actual and potential is large. Investment in youth development would pay off handsomely, both in transfer feed and talent for the team. Just as it is doing at City. City are also showing the way with entertainment facilities, hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants etc, etc, etc. This is a gradual process and it may take the geordies longer than it took City but their owners are certainly not short of the capital required and the club's revenue will increase enormously. I can see a time when City and Newcastle operate on a financial plane far higher than every other club. More than a few scousers would have apoplectic at the origin of the funds and would rant on about sportswashing - but I think they would get little joy out of the independent regulator. As we know, Old Trafford is falling down. The theatres of dreams are elsewhere!

got no problem with the geordies. the few i've known personally in my life have all been a good laugh.

don't really blame newcastle for voting for FFP as they had Mike Ashley in charge back then. and he would have loved if no-one could spend anything. they're a different beast now. likely an ally once we're on an even keel.

Franchise sport is shit, but capping salaries, spend etc. - can only make a sport like football fairer tbh... F1 (SH*t SPORT) They keep fiddling about trying to make it fairer but richest always has the best cars. The driver makes little difference tbf. Best driver in avarage car = average placing. Might as well have each team just show their bank balance at start of the season - announce a winner after comparing for 10 minutes...job done.

But then pgmol would do their very best to ensure the less 'glamorous' clubs weren't in the top echelons for long. And no way would Sly or any of the others take a prolonged interest in clubs like, Fulham, Sheff Utd etc.
The rags and the dippers will always be looked after to ensure the money keeps coming in, ourselves, Arsenal and the Chavs are tolerated because of the wealth and the interest we attract: the smaller clubs are a minor irritant as far as the sport goes.
smaller clubs you said i think i've outed masters ;)

Salary caps do make things fairer in the US, but I’m sure the main reason they were brought in was so that the owners made more profit. If we had a salary cap in football, there should also be a cap on owner profits and on ticket prices and merchandise. It would also have to be a worldwide salary cap, which isn’t something American sports really have to consider.
