Newcastle United 2024/25

Is David Moyes a West Ham legend for winning the Europa Conference?
Probably, many West Ham fans say he should have went after that game to secure his legacy.

I just don’t know why you are arguing with a Newcastle fan who says Howe would be a legend if he wins the League Cup for us.
I’m not arguing with you all about who are and aren’t your legends.

I live and work in Newcastle. Howe is already a legend to these lot up here. League cup or not. They love him.

What I would say to a Newcastle fan is this. Just say The Geordies win the League Cup and in two or 3 years time Howe moves on (say for example the England job) but doesn’t win anything else, a couple of Europa league qualifications.

In 10 or 20 years time would the Geordies be looking back and saying Howe was a legendary manager for Newcastle?

I just feel that the word “legend” has become too diluted in the same way that the term “world Class” is banded around way too loosely too.

Keegan literally did this to us without actually winning us a trophy, and he’s still regarded as a legend.

A League Cup may not mean much to you, fair enough, you guys have achieved a different level to us. I hope that we reach the same level someday, but right now every single one of us would be over the moon with a League Cup win, and would very likely be satisfied with.

Think you would be very satisfied,no Domestic trophy since 69 years ago.

I can understand why he would be viewed as a legend by the Geordies if they actually win the CC. Christ, I'm an FOC, and I wasn't even born the last time they won domestic silverware (not even close). So, it will be a big deal to them. Fans of other clubs will probably see the term as somewhat OTT, which is also understandable. FWIW, I think that TMM will comfortably beat them in the final.

I was thinking Bobby Robson too, won nothing but surely a legend to geordies. In the football real world, you don't need to win multiple trophies to be a legend.

Surprised Big Sam failed up there.

He had the physique, all he had to do was stand on the sidelines with his shirt off and get NUFC tattooed on his gut

A League Cup win means a lot to me - I would never undermine it - it was the only thing that we won from 1970 to 2011 (play off final apart lol) but winning it in 76 didn't make Tony Book a club legend..... the fact he captained us to the title, FA Cup / LC and ECWC AND winning the LC as a manager made him a club legend.

I think (as I've said before) the true sign of being a legend / legendary is when fans of other clubs acknowledge it. Clough / Shankly / Busby / Paisley / Fergie and going back further to Stan Cullis and Herbert Chapman are acknowledged by knowledgeable fans as being just that. I'll accept Howe could be (and Keegan is) a club legend. And that (for me) is where the bar for entry drops a little. And it isn't just about winning. Jimmy Sirrel and John Rudge are legendary figures at Notts County and Port Vale respectively with over 40 years' service between them.

Anyway, I'm repeating myself so I'll bow out and wish you the best in the final

Yes, our first major trophy in decades. Not just winning the trophy but the continued success in Europe.
Hammers fans that moaned about him throughout his tenure are already seeing how much he did for this club.

The whole country will be behind you in the final.

Oh and I'm sure I speak for the majority of old time Blues who would never turn their nose up at winning the League Cup.

I couldn’t agree more on your last point, malg.

I’ve said it many times, it was all we had to cling to for 35 years, even if it contained the greatest League Cup goal ever.

Name a more successful England manager since Alf Ramsey ?
And my point exactly. We raise the bar lower and lower in our quest to label players or managers world class and legendary. Too many statues and Knighthoods going up / given out “because (insert name) got one so this player / manager must have one too.

Yes Southgate was a “successful” England manager (compared to his predecessors but nothing else). But that doesn’t mean he will he be remembered as a “legendary”England manager?
Legendary because he was better than Hoddle, Sven and Allardice!

So you can't name one?
Anyhow, He will be remembered fondly despite the pathetic stick he had to endure online, he united the nation and led the youngest squad in major tournaments including two finals.
Every England manager in todays social media world doesn't stand a chance, they're all 'clueless' and 'cunts' - only possible way to win over 'some' of English fans is to win a World Cup or Euros, even then it will only be because we played 'the worst Brazil/Argentina/Germany etc' in its history or we just 'got lucky'. It's the ultimate poison challice.
I respected what Southgate did, how he conducted himself to onslaught of abuse, how he kept the unity in the squad, gave youngsters and in form players opportunities and ultimately turned England into a consistently very good side, having the highest win % at major tournaments than any other England manager.

Venables is remembered fondly for one major tournament in which we didn't have to qualify for - we drew with Switzerland in a very drab match, lucky to beat Scotland thanks to them missing a pen to equalise with 10 mins to go, 0-0 with Spain winning only on pens thanks to Seamen all match and then lost to Germany. the only good performance was against Holland.
why was it remembered so well and full of joy ? because there wasn't a tidal wave of negativity, there wasn't social media abusing every youngster, there wasn't forums questioning every tactic, sub, player and calling the manager a **** for any changes he made.
