Newcastle United (A) - Post-Match Thread

Good overall yesterday.

Pretty rubbish in the first half. We weren't coping with their long balls over the top and Joelinton (of all people) was running the midfield. But we capitalised on a big mistake for 1-0 and then Cancelo took matters into his own hands for 2-0. That was a hell of a goal. Don't see what the complaints were about the penalty Newcastle wanted - Cancelo took the ball away from Ederson, Fraser and Ederson collided afterwards. Where's the foul being committed?

Second half, we completely shut them down. Very, very professional. De Bruyne and Bernardo moved a bit deeper and we ended up strangling them a bit. Mahrez took his goal really well, Jesus did great work for the 4th. Ederson had fuck all to do for ages and then made a great save. Special mention for Jesus, actually, who was overshadowed a bit by how good Cancelo was but played well across the entire front line yesterday.

The slow crawl continues.

I think it probably should have been given for consistency(they normally always side with the attacker regardless of what happened) but that is a bad comparison. That would be a dangerous tackle, this was a coming together. When none of them get to the ball or anywhere near it and neither player can avoid the collision, then there is a grey area. The player who wins the ball normally decides whether a coming together becomes a foul or not in those situations and neither of them did.

To my eyes, had Cancelo left it, Ederson collects that ball easily and then it doesn't matter if he catches Fraser on the follow through, because he's won the ball. A keeper has to fully commit to that, I'm not sure what happened there. Either Eddie didn't shout loud enough or Cancelo has ignored his claim to the ball. Eddie may have still been dazed or winded from the earlier collision, which may have impacted his ability to communicate it clearly. So there's that too, could the game have been stopped for that collision earlier?

Like I said, I'd have wanted it but it's not quite black and white either. Part of me wishes it had been given because I really don't think it would have had much bearing on the result. So we could do without the narrative, that we've got away with one, playing in refs minds for the next big call. That call could be used to justify a soft/generous decision against City, which could well have a bigger impact in terms of points.
I'm fed up of defending VAR - do you reckon we should go back to business as usual, where we get nothing?
Then, at least we're all on the same songsheet.

Without the goals- it would have been0-0 :) so he is correct !!!!!!!!!
Well can you imagine Eddie Howes pre match team talk “now lads ignore all the goals that we concede and it’s nil nil again “ another point won. I was at the game and Newcastle were shite. For city it was no more than a training session. I agree we weren’t as fluent as normal but still good enough to wipe the floor with the barcodes.

penalty ? No, cancelo had long gone with the ball, their guy was going nowhere apart from a collision with somebody twice his size. cant have a pen when the ball isnt in your grasp.

First goal, when you pressure teams they make mistakes because of nerves. Some shots and crosses pinball off legs, some get through, pressure creates mistakes.

Cancelo goal.... Out of this world, the dribble to side step their defenders was 10 out of 10. Some might say slack defence but in reality you try tackling a good dribbler and covering just in case KDB gets the ball.

MOTD tried to make the game look closer, show every newcastle attack but only half of cities. You only need to look at the stats to see how big a margin there really was, thats of course if you get passed the 4 nil result.

They had 28% possession, so Eddie in the quarter of the game that you had the ball...............

Soon as I saw the none penalty for Newcastle and the commentators went on about 100% pen even some city fans on Twitter Mu initial thought was what the fcuk they talking about a penalty Cancelo had the ball he was in control of it and then the Newcastle player stopped in front of ederson his slide knocked him over yep but the Newcastle player could easily jumped over ederson so for me he should be yellowed carded for me for cheating!

100% none penalty not in a millions years.
