Is owning cars not that common in the UK?

Of course we own cars. If you are commenting upon the angst about trains not running - then that is about a preference for using the train. Couple of reasons someone might do that - one will be that it means you can drink alcohol (we don't encourage people to drive cars after consuming alcohol). The other might be trying to find car parking in a strange city - Newcastle is a classic case in point, the stadium is in the middle of the city, it was built before people had cars and so there is very little car parking provided - it is however an easy walk for the main train station. If the trains run (which is a whole other issue) then it is often the most convenient way to travel to a match.
