Total Control in Second Gear
We needed a reaction after our tepid display at Klanfield. Newcastle threatened in spurts, but with a week off, we took complete control of the match & never really needed to get near our best level.
Bernardo's opener was fortunate, but deserved reward for our early dominance.
Doku playing more centrally today wreaked havoc on Newcastle's defence. They didn't know what to do with him, & with his greater freedom, & Walker & Gvardiol playing high & wide, it allowed Bernardo to move between a double-pivot to a No 10 at will, with Foden & Doku rotating across the midfield.
I seriously liked the look of this setup, albeit it'll be a bit too fly by the seat of your pants in more difficult matches.
Bernardo's second deflected goal before half-time proved to be the deserved, but fortunate winner.
I thought Akanji was brilliant today, as was Rodri & Foden. The Croation axis of Gvardiol & Kovacic were excellent too. Josko showed some top class ball skills, & Mateo set, & kept the tempo in midfield with a dominant display.
The Viking was kept quiet & looked more & more frustrated, & less & less interested as the match wore on, & the rain came down. He really should've been taken off at 70 minutes.
Oscar Bobb looked good when he came on, & Julian added a bit more bite & connectivity to the rest of the team when he replaced Erling.
We got the job done & are Wembley bound to the FA Cup Semi-Finals, for the sixth season on the trot. The media are talking about the double-treble, but we're miles away from contemplating that with the Rags & Dippers possible opponents at Wembley, ArseAnal, Spuds & Villa still to play in the PL, & Real to face in the Champions League last eight.
One game at a time folks! )(
