Newcastle United takeover?

Jim, according to what I have previously read, the Inter City Fairs Cup was not a tournament that was sanctioned by UEFA . Some people recognize it as a major trophy and some do not.
And I was 13 in June 1969,so not quite mid-teens. And I do vaguely remember them winning it,some black and white TV news reports at the time.
@Gary James will concour.....
City fans have always claimed to be the first team to win a domestic and european double - Leeds fans will challenge that in winning the League and Inter City Fairs Cup in 68/69.
As stated the ICFC was not sanctioned by UEFA until it became the UEFA Cup in 1971/72.

The other thing / complication to the claim to understand too was Leeds began the ICFC in the previous season (67/68) but the final was in the autumn of the 68/69 season.
However Leeds also won the League Cup in the 67/68 season so whichever way you look at it, they won 2 cups (one domestic, one european) during one of those seasons.... As long as the ICFC is deemed a proper cup!

Will this be a sucess story like ours? I don’t think it will be possible for the new owners to turn the money taps on like Shiekh Mansour did back in 2008 with the financial fair play rules, I bet the Newcastle board were one of the teams that voted for it when it was introduced to the premier league.

Look at Everton they have money but can’t spend it aggressively like City and Chelsea did, good luck to Newcastle if it happens the rags being another notch down the table is something we can all approve.

FFP will be dropped or changed further, next year when united revenue drops off a cliff if they don’t get back into Europe.
Something like , you can make a loss over 3 years equivalent to your revenue... or number of ‘fans’...

Until the PL members realise that they are in the situation they are in because the original Sky4 constantly bullied/blinded them into changing the rules to ensure they stay there, and the bad bogeymen of professional ‘outside investment’ of Chelsea and city ,( and also Leicester, Sheffield, Bournemouth, liverpool), are exactly what’s required to happen to their own clubs, to make the league more competitive, more a sellable product, more equitable...not less,

investment in tangible assets, like stadium, training grounds, academies, is what’s required.

Splurge on players, without that real investment in infrastructure and you have the scenarios of United in a decaying scaffold, and villa betting all their new PL money on players to keep them in the PL.
City did it, Leeds did it, Blackburn did it... the past has many examples of crap investment, and paid the price.

it would be nice if united paid it as well, without the PL saving their asses.

If this goes through then good luck to them we have had a fantastic 10 year period and I wouldn't change it for anything.

The old guard have had a long sustained period of dominance and it would be good to see how they and their fans cope with a period of mid table mediocrity.

The only thing I would say is that they will soon find out that having money and being able to spend it the way they want are two different things,

God help them if they actually win anything.

I wonder, if it goes through, there will be constant references to 'oil money', 'financial doping' and the weekly airing of 'human rights'? Or will the Geordie Arabs be a different kind of Arab?

Depends how much damage they do, look where Arsenal and the rags were in the game before 2008, Liverpool got pushed out of the champions league closed shop for most of the last decade as a result of City’s rise. Three clubs with huge sway in football politics and the media who could direct their vitriol at our club for daring to take their monopolies away from them. Newcastle won’t get this as the damage is already done at the swamp and the emirates, they will be welcomed as another team that can stop us instead.

The other point worth adding... 1969-70 was the first season when ALL 92 league clubs entered the League Cup so until then could it really be described as a major competition?

So The League Cup only became a major trophy the year City first won it. Are you going to tell the previous winners in the 60s that they only won a minor trophy.
Best of luck with that one pal. I would wear your tin hat when you announce it on Twitter.LOL!!!

Investment in infrastructure comes outside the realms of FFP; that’s why we were able to build CFA.

It's funny that people only want to buy Newcastle during the January transfer window.

And come Feb 1st, they have slipped quietly into the night leaving Ashley unable to buy any players.
