Newcastle United thread 2012/13

Krul ...top five gks in the league i.m.o.

Taylor should be back to partner Collocini and they could have a formidable wall back there as I was starting to rate Taylor. They may take half a season to gel together after injury, and he may not be the same either, so that's something to watch.

I like their fullbacks especially Santon who I believe won a Ch. League with Inter (could be wrong)...he will be quality this year and a threat going forward, as he was towards the end of last year. Simpsons a bit of a **** to me, but he's a good player. If any of their back 4 were to be replaced and improved it would be Simpson by a country mile (especially since they have R Taylor as utility and for lb cover).

Midfield if they can keep Tiote, Ben Arfa, and Guthrie can keep progressing, with Gutierrez in and around there and the wings....quality.

Ba and Cisse...nuff said.

Should be another good year and again hopefully at the expense of a Dipper, Spud, Blue Dip, Rag, Arse etc.

I agree, especially with Santon who I only recently found out has been playing out of his favoured position last year, if they improve on Simpson and perhaps get a little more depth in one or two places they should be a real force next season.

To be honest, part of me wouldn't mind Cabaye at our club as a long term replacement for Barry.

Alledgedly after Mathieu Debuchy to replace simpson. Probably pie in the sky mind but that would be decent.

Guthrie has been released and signed for Reading iirc.

In an ideal world i would like us to keep all top players and add a RB, a decent CB (Saylor while decent player is rather injury prone) a Left winger (Obertan FFS) and maybe 2/3 squad level players. If that happens i could see us top 6 comfortably. Sadly though we dont live in an ideal world so can see a few outgoings before the window closes so i would be happy with a top half finish (ideally above the Mackems)

Thats what amazes me about the rags - even when their players are so shite that even a blindfolded Stevie Wonder could see how bad they are they still manage to get reasonable transfer fees for them.

I wouldn't have paid £3 for Obertan let alone £3m, I'm fucling convinced there is a mates backhander deal going on with these ex-rag managers (and certain other managers also). Steve Bruce should have been locked up for fraud for what he spent on rag rejects also.

^^^^

Never really thought about that, though its an excellent point. Obertan certainly has n't proved to be the best value transfer ever his only asset is his pace, maybe he would be more suited to the olympics!

Although to be fair we did get £35m for Carroll so cant complain too much in the grand scheme of things!

Sky Sports sources understand Newcastle United are close to sealing a deal for France international Mathieu Debuchy.

The Magpies targeted the Lille defender ahead of Euro 2012 and, following his impressive showing in Poland and Ukraine, made a bid which was rejected.

Italian giants Inter Milan also saw a bid rejected, and as recently as this week Lille stated they hoped to agree a new deal with the 26-year-old.

However, Newcastle have re-opened talks in the last 48 hours and are now close to coming to an agreement on a deal worth around £7million.

The Magpies are hoping to push through the deal in the coming days as they want Debuchy signed and sealed, so he can join their pre-season tour of Germany.

Reading manager Brian McDermott is closing on a deal for Newcastle's Danny Simpson

Simpson's arrival will end McDermott's search for a new right back, with the Reading boss also running the rule over Crystal Palace's Nathaniel Clyne and Spurs's Kyle Naughton.

Sounds like good business but don't forget they may be paying out a lot in wages or signing on fees. I remember everyone saying how Van Der Vaart was the steal of last season (he turned out not to be) at £7M but nobody had factored in his huge wages.

What do you consider to be huge wages?

God if we can get simpson (average at best) out and get Debuchy that would make me rather happy.

Also Carroll back PLEASE GOD NO

See I don't get this dread about the Carroll loan, Liverpool spunked £35,000,000 on him. You'll be taking him on loan for no fee or a minimal one at that with a written in cut price fee to firm the transfer at any time. So if he impresses you get back a striker for a low fee compared to that you sold him for who scores goals. If not you send him packing back to Liverpool for nothing.

See i dont think it's anything to do with him coming back as such more about risking what we have at the moment in terms of personnel and style of play.

For me towards the end of last season when we had Cisse up top and Ben Arfa and Ba playing off him was some of the most exciting football I have seen us play for a long while and not sure how the big fella would fit into the equation.

I appreciate its always good to have a plan B but the cynic in me (and i suspect in a lot of toon fans) suspects that if we do sign him then we would likely lose at least one (if not both) of our senegalese strikers and that would imo be bad news.
