What is a Captain supposed to do on the field? For me, they lead by example and should almost feel like a fan on the pitch. They communicate the managers ideas, keep everyone in check, speak to the referee and basically when the game isn't going for you, they are able to drag the players around them back into the game. It's almost "win at all costs" to some extent in that some players are born with it, but others need leading. This is why I do think who wears the armband is important.
This is exactly why Kompany was the Captain for so long because you knew if you were 3-0 down at half time, he would be the one to score the first goal on the 47th minute to lead the come back. He's scored SO MANY important goals for us and we can all recognise what a leader he was and its clear that as a footballer and a man he was hugely respected.
I don't think age has anything to do with being the Captain. It's attitude more than anything and I think players like Kompany, Zabaleta, De Jong, Aguero, Fernandinho, Tevez have/had it. Even players like Morrison, Dickov, Bellamy, Tiatto and dare I say Barton had it. I don't see it in Stones, Zinchenko, Sterling, D Silva, Ederson, Jesus, Gundogan, Rodri, Cancelo or Mahrez. It's not to say they are bad players at all - far from it - but it feels to me like a personality trait. It's not bad thing as if we had too many Captains I think it would lead to trouble in the dressing room.
Given all that, I do think the armband is up in the air. I don't see KdB as a leader and I think he needs to concentrate on his own game basically. He just isn't a natural Captain for me and whilst he might be one of our best players, he's not a leader. Fernandinho is the most obvious Captain and to some extent, I can see Bernardo Silva as a possible Captain. In all honesty, not to cause any problems, I'd be happy this year to leave it with KdB.
However, it's pretty clear to me that Dias is the rock that the team depends on. Since he arrived, he's turned us from a top 6 team to a title winning one. He's turned us from a team liable to suckerpunched, shit goals from shit teams into a team who don't concede goals full stop. He's made Stones into the 2nd best central defender in England, Cancelo looks a bargain, Zinchenko looks a great full back and turned the whole team around. Whether it's his skill, or understanding of what Pep wants from the team, this guy looks every inch next seasons Captain.
Ruben Dias will be the Captain next season and will retire as the Captain of Manchester City.
