Why keep Bond British? with the new European age shouldn't he just be European and then we can get Fassbender in? After all, Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes...

Bond under Connery was set during the cold war. There were no black british spies at that time so for it to accurate bond had to be white.
If the new bond films were still set during that era then bond would still have to be white.
However the new bond films are set in present day when there are many black people working in government agencies and therefore there is no reason why bond couldn’t be black.
It’s not a matter of race it’s just a matter of accuracy – if you were to do a historically solid remake of tudor England you wouldn’t cast Henry as a black man.

This, in itself, would make 'Bond' just a character, whilst '007' is the agent status of whomever owns that codename. It just 'happens' to be Bond's 'at the moment'. Are we also to conclude that 'James Bond' is not a codename?
