What does the 10 mean, yards?

I know the 1st bit is the 1st down

How does this work? Once you get 10 yards forward, it goes back to 1st down? How many downs do you get ?

4 downs. If they dont make 10 yards in the first 3 they generally kick the ball away (punt)

You have four downs to make ten yards.

Once you’ve made the ten yards, the four downs start again.

As long as you keep making progress, you get another set of downs, until you score, either a Touchdown or a field goal.
