The only bitterness on here seems to come from you, my Liberal friend.
You even manage to contradict yourself in epic fashion, stating that Clegg got into bed with the Tories 'because of mathematics - nothing more nothing less', then go on to say that naked power was his primary motive.
So which is it? - you can't have it both ways.
They are not contradictory at all. One is concomitant of the other. Clegg's lust for office was best served by the electoral mathematics before his feet. He chose the path of least resistance to quench his 'will to power'.

Reciprocated :-)

Gordon's got a point, hasn't he Fetters?

The way the numbers stacked up, whatever sort of coalition was put together Clegg would have been part of it and was in many ways the kingmaker.

The only realistic alternatives to a coalition in 2010 were for Cameron to form a minority administration or for Brown to remain in office pending a further election, each of which would have put in doubt clegg's prospects of being in government.

He has got a point.
He does indeed love me.
Seriously though, I can see why Clegg took the decision he did, although personally I find it abhorrent, and the reason for that is mainly deceit.
Clegg stated numerous times during the three televised debates that he would not enter into a post-election coalition with anybody.
Period.
So nobody voting considered it to be on the electoral agenda.
It simply wasn't an option.
Lo and behold - Dave offers a shiny Westminster desk to Clegg and his chosen ones, and at the first hint of a portfolio that means fuck all, they fall over themselves in a display of fawning acquiescence that makes the nodding Churchill dog look confrontational.
And we have the very coalition that Clegg ruled out.
He is nothing more than a discredited opportunist liar, and sadly the decent rank and file members of the Liberal party will have to pay the price for his blatant careerism when they have the unenviable task of canvassing on the doorstep.

The reason many people predicted the coalition crumbling in a short space of time was because the two parties who formed it were so far apart, politically at the time. And while the Liberals as the minority party were obviously going to accept they would have to play second fiddle, there were major issues that the two parties held such opposite views on that people couldn't see how they could possibly be a compromise between the two that would keep the coalition together.

What people didn't realise in 2010 was that the agreement appears to have been that Cameron allows Clegg to sit by his side like a nodding donkey and in theory be his number two. While for Cleggs part, he agrees to totally abandon any principles or promises the Liberals may have made, if it contradicted anything his new master was telling the public.

Not sure that's true, mate. Can't see a LibDem politician ever making themselves such a hostage to fortune in that regard.

I'm sure he repeatedly said he would talk to the party with the most seats first, as that was only fair.

My memory may be less than perfect, but it sticks in my brain that he ruled it out, although if some computer genius on here can dig the debate footage out, then I stand to be corrected.

Whilst the debate on all sides is, as usual for the Cellar, interesting and learned (in some quarters), I am more surprised by the fact that none of our erudite, politically savvy Cellarites picked up on that some no-mark Lib-Dem MP has failed to respond to an email sent to him by El Presidente himself!

The fucking twat!

I have notified FTG to send a 'representative' of the security team to 'have a chat' with said MP.

No wonder the left are bitter.
I'm going to hack Irani's Wikipedia account again, because it's probably his fault.
