Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

Or we could spend some money and supply Nico with some serviceable fullbacks and stop giving up on our investments before they even play two seasons. Maybe, just maybe buying a new CB every year and quitting on the previous isn't a good strategy. Especially with the way we pick em. Boateng, Savic and Nastacic combined for a whopping 84 appearances combined then we followed that up with Demichelis as a stop gap that was destined to end poorly. Otamendi's been the most capable CB we've bought in the last 7 years and we're already shoving him out the door?! 50 appearances surrounded by kompany, yaya, fernandinho who isn't a typical DM, mangala, kolarov at CB AND LB!!!, 4 past it fullbacks in total, John "Mr lackadaisical" Stones and also let's top it off by installing a new system that's devastatingly error prone to the back line if not executed properly. Fuck it. Nico's the problem! Yep. Nico's gotta go. He's too aggressive. Virgil Van Dijk will solve everything surely. I'm not entirely serious here but it's an absolute joke that he's the scapegoat here.
How is criticism making him a "scapegoat" and where did I say we should get rid? My point was that he didn't fit the description you gave in your earlier post, and that we need a CB of that type, sadly to replace Vinny. I agree with your point in relation especially to Savic and Nastasic but to apply that argument to Otamendi is a bit disingenuous, Savic and Nastasic were raw, inexperienced defenders who were not given time enough to mature and develop at City - Otamendi is 28 and arrived as an experienced international defender, I would expect him to be the organiser and leader of the defence in Vinny's absence but I've yet to see much sign of that since he joined.

It was a misunderstanding of your post. I wasn't sure what you were implying. I thought it might have been a cheeky jab at Nico not consistently putting in 7/8 performances like the quote said and that we needed to buy someone who would in January. That would effectively get rid of him in our best X1. Yes Vinny will need to be replaced but I'm not sure pulling that off in January is the right time to do it. If it does happen in January I'm sincerely hoping it's not somebody we're 'settling' on because it's the best we could find.

You're correct in that it was disingenuous in that scenario but that's only 1 player out the 5. My point was that our scouts we're making the correct evaluations long term and that we need to let things play out instead of panic buying/selling.

How can someone even say that otamendi isn't deserving his place in city squad.
We have got one of the best central defenders in the world and some people, who should be watching maybe cricket rather than football, say that stones is better or maybe even kolarov :D
What's wrong with you people, learn to appreciate what club has got and apply same standards to each player. I remember kompany making stupid mistakes, against liverpool, against united and in big cl games, but in overall city fans assume that he was one of the best in those years. I don't understand why in case of otamendi people think that otamendi isn't deserving his place. Can someone name me a single football match or matches were otamendi wasn't playing at his level ? This season for example....

The fact you claim he is one of the best defenders in the world suggests maybe you should stick to cricket. No player with decision making as bad as Otamendi should ever be called one of the best defenders in the world. He see's the ball he chases after it. Forget positioning, never mind if he doesn't stand a chance of getting anywhere near the ball, never mind leaving his team mates in the shit if he misses his tackle if he sees it he is going for it. Yesterday where they should have had a penalty shows that perfectly. Was never ever in a hundred attempts going to win that header but no he saw the ball so he went for it. You simply cannot rely on such a player because defending then becomes pot luck.

I concur. He's garbage, had a decent run of form for a handful of matches at the start of the season but that's all.

That's fine. It does happen occasionally and it burns him. There's also the other side of the coin too. You want to pretend the interceptions and breaks don't happen or him blocking wide open shots in the box? Obviously LaLiga thought it was a net positive because he was Defender of Year. You can add txiki and Manuel to that list that think its worth it. Pep routinely selects Nico while Stones and AK sit.

Otamendi has his style of playing which is being aggressive while defending and tackling and that's what i like in defenders, rather than always depending on right decision, position.
That's how big defenders play, they are never afraid to risk and that character is vital when you want to build a team that is capable of winning CL, that's called individuality ;)
I don't see that much individuality in stones, neither did in Mangala or Nastasic or Savic or in Lescott. That's what kompany has got and that's why sometimes he was used to make stupid mistakes but in most cases that was why city was winning titles during Mancini period, when in most cases team had to defend 1-0 for 25-30 minutes.

He is the best in tackling, look at his highlights, he is always between making stupid mistake or making a highlight of the match and in most cases, in 95% he is making highlights.
I remember maybe Suarez episode where his tackle was not successful but it was successful against Bale, Marcelo and big number of players.

When you look at Barcelona squad you don't see just good players who know how to play properly, they are individuals, characters and in our team otamendi is one of them who has got that.

PS I think this forum is full of trolls maybe, otherwise it's illogical how can someone question otamendi's qualities, we are lucky to have him. Even yesterday, i didn't count how many head battles he won yesterday, yes that foul wasn't good, but 5 or 6 times he won header it saved us from goal maybe.

I'm a fan, but he does have some obvious flaws in his game. He seems to do all the basics wrongly but does the hard parts right. His use of the ball is excellent and I do think he and Stones compliment each other nicely.
