No it's not. The odd hollywood pass doesn't disguise his wayward passing. He misplaces passes constantly and I've never seen a player over hit passes like him. The weight he puts on the pass when he hammers 20 yard passes makes it incredibly difficult for players to retain possession with theirs backs to the goal in tight situations. Hopefully Pep will sort it s he won't accept it, that or he'll just instruct him to give it to Stones whenever possible and let him do the passing.

If you take out his headed passes and his long balls, then his pass accuracy sits at 93%(1139/1225)

What qualifies as a a long ball? Is that just 10-15 yard passes? If so, surely almost all defenders in the league would have a similar stat if you take out those things, no? Regardless, that's just another example of stats not telling the whole story. If Otamendi smashes the ball into a midfielder who can't control and retain the ball because of the weight he's passed it, that will go down in the stats as a completed pass when in actual fact he's the reason possession was lost.

Not a big Otamendi fan but he does pass very well into midfield. He's composed, always offers himself and sees the obvious and the less obvious pass.

Mentally he needs to remain focused or he really does make some comical decissions.

Premier league and Champions league stats combined.

Otamendi - 95 tackles, 157 interceptions, 312 clearances, 22 blocks, 125/202 headed duels won(62%), 85% pass accuracy, 2 goals, 0 assists

Sagna - 61 tackles, 72 interceptions, 203 clearances, 13 blocks, 146/241 headed duels won(61%), 84% pass accuracy, 0 goals, 3 assists

Different positions require more or less tackling and interception opportunities. For example, Sagna ending with more assists. It also doesn't tell you how many Otamendi missed, or how many mistakes and chances came from his flying in, like he did against Steaua, like it doesn't tell you similar about Sagna. However one divides opinion and the other was revered for a consistent season tells a story more so than stats. Stats can tell you whatever you want them to, and watching the two, Sagna was more consistent, dependable and less mistake prone.

Exactly, and as a centre back that makes you a bad player. A world class, or top level defender doesn't make as many unforced mistakes as Otamendi.

I agree, Sagna was consistently solid, like say James Milner was for us. I Just think Otamendi was just that notch above, got through so much defensive work in a team that does among the least defending in the league. He could be having a fantastic game, he misses a slide tackle then all that he done before is forgotten by many on here. Now it's the only part of his game people focus on, ignore the rest and just wait for him to miss a tackle, classic confirmation bias.

Otamendi + Stones could be our Puyol + Pique
Preaching to the choir

His weight (and accuracy) of his passes into the centre of the midfield are generally good and a strength of his compared to most CBs who just lay it off to the fullback constantly. You need more pace on the ball so it's not intercepted. It also speeds up the attack. Good players can control such a pass and I've rarely seen our players struggle with it.

In short, not sure what game you're watching...

I've been one of his biggest critics but he won everything in the air and didn't dive in once. Outstanding with Stones today.
