Nicolas Otamendi - 2017/18 performances

More about having a world class keeper behind them and also the continued improvement of John Stones who is growing into a future captain. Although as we all know the fullbacks on both sides have been really poor for two seasons and should have been upgraded sooner.

I think the keeper isn't a huge factor in his personal play, but having a competent left back and an on form Fernandinho is making a massive difference. Nico looked a mess last year, but how much of that was trying to cover the left area as well as his own? Delph did great and Mendy and Danilo have both played great in the lb slot, allowing Nico to just do his own job.

He so often dived in and was left sprawling with neither man nor ball connected. He's now exhibiting a lot more control and thought, which is why, I think, he has developed a lot more consistency. PabZab used to do the same thing when he first came. There'd be a string of free kicks just outside the box, but he removed those lapses from his game and I think Otters is doing the same.

Yesterday, the number of times we caught Chelsea players offside, because Otamendi was in line rather than stood behind playing people onside, like an idiot, as he did v Benteke only a week ago. Also against Shalke, he caught their player out, late in the game. Big improvement.

This offside line which we are not actually playing apparently, thus it's not a mistake, when he alone, is stood two yards deeper than anyone else, in his 3rd season at the club.

If he had defended v Chelsea, like he did v Liverpool & Palace, Morata would have killed us, in the first 15 mins & this whole forum would be in meltdown.

He was excellent, yesterday.

7 times we caught them offside, the discipline from all four was brilliant.

Ive been critical of Otamendi, but aside from the pointless tackle on Will.I.An, I thought he was superb yesterday, and what a ball to start off the move for the goal.

I have been a consistent Otamendi supporter so I'm glad I now have the opportunity to be smug...

... awaits a red card and three own goals in the next game

Ottamendi can easily swing between the sublime and the ridiculous in the same passage of play. Very good yesterday apart from his stupid challenge on Willian. Pass to de bruyne for the opener was fantastic

Pretty sure that Willian tackle was to get back at him in some way. Cause that just came out of nowhere and unnecessary. Otamendi’s rash but he’s not stupid. That was deliberate.

I'm not his biggest fan but he was brilliant yesterday. The pass forward for the goal pretty much took their midfield out of the equation.

One of his biggest critics, but he was outstanding on Sat. his best game in a city shirt maybe?
