I mean despite that he actually had a decent game. Won a load of tackles and headers.
 
Had an 8/10 performance until he kicked the ball at Porgba

Went up to a 9 after that

He's the only Argentinian who can defend. Him, Messi and Aguero badly let down by the dross around them, esp. the dross in the technical area

He did what he is suppose to, when he defended. But he was wasteful with the ball, looking for the long balls over and over again - failing miserably every time.

Don't know if it's his role or fault, but the way Argentina defended the French counters was school book examples of what not to do collectively, as well as individually.

If you play as lead defender, responsible for the line, you have to adapt to the fact that your team can't defend counters. You have to fall back. If those dross players initiates a press that is doomed to fail, you can't rush up into a second press that is doomed to fail. Otamendi did this, all night long. He may be a gifted athlete and footballer, that follows instructions well. But he is clearly not a natural defender/leader that can take charge of his back line and adapt.

Not being a leader doesn't mean he can't defend, listing "natural defender/leader" as interchangeable is wrong. He's a pretty exceptional 1v1 defender, literally the only ARG you can say that about now that Mascherano is well past it.
