Is there a point at which ‘poverty’ blurs into ‘fear of your life’?

According to Sally Hayden, even fairly recently, life expectancy in Sierra Leone was just 51 for men and 52 for women, whereas Western European men live an extra 29 years on average and women 32.

Hayden’s extraordinary book is actually about the Libya to Italy crossing so am not sure how many have tried to get as far as here. But that statistic does make you think.
