North Stand Construction Discussion

If you, or someone else of course, were to make a few predictions about what they would build on the collar site, what would you guess?

I'm quite busy this morning but I'll have a go at this when I have a bit of time. Probably should go in the general Campus thread, though, rather than this one, which is related to construction.

As for this thread, can I just @cpoverview and @jrb in particular for their work on this thread. Your updates are superb and compelling. Thanks also to the contributors to the thread who know about construction for your comments, which enable the rest of us to make sense of and appreciate things that would otherwise pass us by.

Like I said yesterday, the last set of pictures are mostly construction workers in the cherry pickers working on the steel structure. The pictures include the ends of the steel structure joining the stand.

My next set of pictures will be in 4 weeks time when the construction site closes for Christmas. Hopefully there will be a few changes by then, like glazing going in on the hotel, etc.

The cherry picker pictures are in no particular order.

I really am so intrugued over that misisng horizontal in the middle section now, what the reason for that is.

I think a lot of City fans jaws are going to hit the ground on Saturday when they see how far the North stand has come along since the last home game.

I would not be surprised if by then the whole of 'the shell' of the skybar section is fully built. And by that I mean the bottom beams, the mid-floor beams, and both vertical sides, one being the truss at the back the other on top of the terraces to the front.

The roof, once the rest of it is ready to start, as it is part of the overall stand roof and ties in with that. Although there do appear to be nodes for beams just below the main roof line so maybe they might get those in ahead to brace the whole thing.

Is there any particular reason that the fishplate(s) towards the top of the skybar framework seem to have multi-coloured bolts connecting them? I thought it may have been an artifact of the camera processing at first but it only seems to be there?

The 2 steel tripods, forgot what you called them, are going to be landmarks in their own rights, sat on the top of the already tall steel structure/stand.

Hopefully a blue vertical laser beam will be added to each tripod projecting into the (night) sky to mark the opening of the stand. :-)

Could possibly be marked to show which have been tightened up (torqued up) to the correct tension,
its whats done usually in engineering for busbars etc, marked once when tightened and again in a different colour when checked with a torque wrench
maybe not though

Looking at @jrb ’s pictures the far left and right are also missing.

Yeah noticed that when it was on the ground, although them I can understand, as they would be more awkward to line up in mid air than add later once it is all connected.

The middle one though I can't see a reason for, hence the intrigue.
