North Stand Construction Discussion

New stadium on CFA site sounds unlikely, unless it's going to be upgrading the current for the women's team and eds
The CFA site area is bigger than the Etihad Campus area & with very few buildings.

I've seen the CGIs that were produced several years ago & even then they were fabulous.

City will buy/develop the Asda & Tesla sites, + other ad hoc sites, to make the campus, including the athletics stadium and tennis centre, more cohesive and efficient.

A 'start from scratch' approach will be used to ensure maximum utilisation and efficiency is achieved.

The CFA will be located at the western end of the bridge.

The Etihad 'stadium' will be multi purpose and absolutely state of the art. It includes subtereaneum levels.

The whole expanded campus will be without comparison as a global sports and entertainment venue, and if you look at the development of Sadiyyat Island (where i am today) with the Louvè, Gugenheim and Zayed Musums you'll gain an insight to the art of the possible.

Next to nothing existed on the island 25 years ago.

The vision of our combined ownership knows NO bounds or limitatations.

Enjoy the ride.

So the site will in effect become an island in itself and the Etihad will just be a part of an entertainment venue? Unlike Saadiyat Island things did exist before and IMHO I think the area will lose something if it's all wiped out.

Fuck me the place was a polluted wasteland afore the stadium & CFA were built.

Its almost unrecognisable now and will change again in the future as Manchester Central has.

The only thing thats constant is change ...... but nostagia aint what it used to be !!

Happy New Year.

Yes, thanks to all for our continuing education and the ongoing pics - I know you'll keep it up.

We're already leaving the scum trailing in our wake with the present fabulous developments. It's all very damaging to them, piled with debts; no money for players, and a leaky, vermin infested dump of a ground.

If I don't see the replacement Etihad in my lifetime, I'll still die a happy man after these last 15 years.

I think whilst our owners obviously could build a brand new stadium, I doubt they will be anywhere near considering that. The stadium just needs to get to 70,000 to be able to host CL finals. From a financial viewpoint that could make sense but trying to get to 80k, 90k, 100k wouldn't as the additional seats would only be low-value/hard-to-sell, poor views. The only event worth bidding for to host in such a large stadium is the WC final and if that's in the UK it's not going to happen anywhere other than London.

So the question is can the Etihad get to 70k? Possibly, but it might need a change in legislation on safe standing so it allows more fans to stand in some blocks than currently, in conjunction with new roofs and extended third tiers in the east and west stands.

That's my view, anyway. I suppose if the cost/practicality of doing the sides is more trouble/cost than just building a new stadium I could be wrong, but I think that's unlikely.

I'd be very interested in seeing any materials that show an expanded Ethiad or even a new facility. I would think expanded West and East stands would mean the end of the spirals unless they were incorporated inside the new structure

60,000 is the threshold for a CL final, and this extension takes us to 62ish.

There is also a minimum hospitality requirement, which this ticks.

Indeed the club officals have said as much over the last year, I am sure at one point they noted that this extension is done with the view of hosting a CL final when complete.

Yes that's true but it's usually held in a 70k+ sized stadium since 2007 excluding the pandemic, with only 2 under that (both at 65k), so we might still need to extend anyway.
