North Stand Construction Discussion

Did you know?

City’s first matches were played near ‘Clowes Street’.

The Clowes End.

I thought I’d bring a bit of City history into the North stand naming discussion. :-)

The location chosen for the football team's first games was essentially an area of unused waste land known in records to be "near Clowes Street", and picked as it was also the location that the St Mark's cricket teams played.

Hate to say it but a loop line from Etihad to Old Trafford Swamp via Manchester City Centre could solve Greater Manchester's football stadium problems... and bring tourists to both areas. Obviously as a monorail, without sounding monotonous

Slightly off topic. And it’s from the Daily Fail, so a massive pinch of salt.

‘At least one American billionaire owner of a Premier League club is willing to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to sprucing up his stadium.

The original cost for Fulham owner Shahid Khan to upgrade Craven Cottage’s Riverside Stand was £80million, but that has now soared to £200m — and Khan is happy to pay top-dollar for a raft of high-end adjustments.

The capacity increase will be only around 3,000 seats, but the revamped stand includes a boutique hotel, health club and spa, outdoor swimming pool, Michelin star restaurants and members’ club.

Khan also purchased a nine-metre slice of the Thames to enable a walkway around the stand. Work should be finished in time for the 2023-24 season’.

Considering the Coop Live Arena construction costs have rocketed, and parts of the HS2 line have been suspended due to the massive increase in construction costs, City will do very well to get the North stand redevelopment done on budget.

Watch the video.

It highlights exactly why there is such a huge problem with cars and traffic around the Etihad before and especially after a match. The amount of cars used to get to the Etihad on a match day is……(fill in as appropriate)

The club, TFGM, and MCC have to make public transport and match day travel better and more frequent if they are to get people out of their cars traveling to matches at the Etihad. Because if they don’t, and when the Etihad is expanded to 61,000+, the issue is only going to get worse. Not to mention the new car parking restrictions around the ground.

All 3 of them have another 4 years to get a grip of the on-going problem and to sort it out once and for all.

Drone video of the Etihad. City v Newcastle match day. Look at the amount of cars parked on the Collar site and on the official car parks at the back of the Etihad Campus. And on the school playing field in-front of the South Stand . X’s that by all the cars parked in the surrounding streets and further out. Hundreds, maybe 1000’s of cars.

The car and transport issue also highlights a conflict of interest. The amount of money City make from match day parking, and will lose if a proper and sustainable transport system is put in place on match days.

The video also features great shots of the Coop Live Arena and the North stand end of the Etihad.(use your imagination and visualise the North stand expansion)

So we could Clowes the stand because we have no fans? ;)

Cost to the client / end user and costs rocketing for contractors are 2 completely different things on the majority of contracts.

If the spec stays the same, the programme stays the same or (changes with time relief only) the cost to the client wont change.

Assuming City have the spec right their costs will stay as agreed as they have the Main Contractors signed up - any 'massive increases in construction costs' will be borne by the contractors.

Only asking, as I’m interested.Thanks.

‘Manchester City Football Club is aiming to appoint a main contractor this September to deliver its new stadium expansion, with work expected to start in November if a planning application is approved’.

So, it’s a set price then? Won’t that price have gone up from initial estimates and discussions, which probably started quite a while back?

The cost of building the Coop Live Arena has definitely risen. So has the cost of building Factory International, as another example.

Didn’t Worsley say the construction company, was it Laing O'Rourke, lost money on building the South Stand expansion. Stand corrected on that.

I’m not saying you’re wrong and they do need to something. It will always come down to cost though and the cost will be weighed up against the traffic for maybe 3 hours after about 25 games a year. They will always make that calculation to decide exactly how much they are willing to spend on trying to improve traffic and transport around the stadium, money they might believe is better spent in other parts of Manchester / Greater Manchester.
The arena may change it a bit but most days it will be 15000 getting away and it will only be an issue when City have a night game ,about 10 nights a year ?

You're confusing the cost of building rising with the cost of placing the contract. Once the order is placed (with most contracts), any cost rises are down to the contractor

Whether the estimates have gone up from. Estimate to placing the contract depends on how much inflation was priced in and when the estimate was done, the scheme was budgetet at £300m months ago, and that's the figure mentioned now. Inflation in the industry is more controlled now.

I've not had confirmation its Laings for the extention I'd imagine it is though and yes they lost money on the South stand. They are definitely not doing the whole site as another large MC has been appointed for the hotel.

There is very little change on co-op live Bam got their order latest February 2020 - I cryptically posted the below 12/2/20, it wasnt confirmed in the press until around May 2021, there was even posters on here saying it won't be Bam because of issues with the training ground when it was already agreed.

Bam will be losing a fortune (8 figure+).

Same for the arena, pesky NDAs. I'd imagine after the consultation period it will be wham bam and on we go with a quick start.
