The council don't own it. If we were to buy the stadium (which we have explored in the past) then Sport England would get the money. The council do get the rent though.

As we have what's left of a 250 year lease then we effectively own it and neither of those two parties can force us to host our out of town subdued neighbours.
 
Why is everyone talking about this still? There’s next to no chance of it happening.

We’ve not paid hundreds of millions to expand the stadium only to have the rags take advantage of it. It’d also be against the terms of the lease.

Not only that but United own enough land around the swamp to build a new swamp while still playing at the current swamp.

The stadium is owned by Manchester City Council and leased by the football club on a 'fully repairing' basis. All operating, maintenance and future capital costs are borne by the club, who consequently receive all revenues from stadium users.

Manchester City signed an agreement with Manchester City Council in March 2010 to allow a £1 billion redevelopment led by architect Rafael Viñoly.

They are our main commercial competitor. Not a chance we will help United gain a commercial advantage over us. They are toxic and have tried to destroy us with a smear campaign. They and LFC were involved in leaking confidential information about the CAS probe. They despise us and have done everything they can to try and destroy us. Khaldoon is a smart operator and thinks long-term.

That's not correct. Sport England put in 77mill of the 110mill initial cost and the council the rest but then the council got Maine Road for free when we moved. The club then paid the cost of turning the athletics stadium into a football stadium.

The council get the rent annually but if we bought the stadium then Sport England get the purchase money. When we were looking at buying it to possibly build a new stadium where the campus is now the difficulty was that Sport England didn't want to sell it for political reasons as public money had been used. The other problem was that the council would lose several million of revenue each year.

Again this was from the stadium tour, where the guide mentioned the £4.5 million yearly rent.
