North Stand Construction Discussion

Never seen that in my life and I’ve sat all over the stadium. If I look for it next time am I never going to able to unsee it :)

After the number of pages we have talked about it here, think it will be with you forever regardless.

Or till they expand the east and west sides and move/remove it altogether.

Spent about 4 hours today up and down in a mewp similar to the ones they use at the north stand. At a height of 30-42m. Still trying to shake my sea legs off, kudos to the guys doing it all day every day, fuck that for a laugh.

Appreciate the builders! They deserve all the tea they can get.
I used to use MEWPs regularly when I was working in mobile telecoms. My mate was up at about 20m in a picker basket one day and the hydrolic pipe burst spraying fluid everywhere, my mate shouted "it's tipping over!" Soon as he said that it had (basket) almost hit the ground. Lucky for him he jumped out onto grass about 10 ft off the deck. Lucky for me I heard him shout as I was earthing some cables directly under the gantry it crashed into. I was OK but my mate was still shaking like a shitting dog. Picker driver said he'd fixed the hydrolic tubing and added new fluid. Asked my mate if he was OK to go back up, the daft twat. Was a near miss incident and no one was allowed to lift a tool after that nevermind go back up in a picker basket.

I went on a 4 day MEWP course, the only thing I came out of it with was a desire never to go up in one again, and I've managed that and now my license has expired, thank fuck

At the Etihad now.

More of the cladding is on. It's not finished yet, but there's enough cladding on and glass in to give a good idea what the exterior of the stand is going to look like. I'll post the pictures when I get home.
Hi JRB

Forgive me but is the cladding sample not for the hotel rather than the stand itself ??

I take it you suffer vertigo? I've been in hundreds of cherry pickers and the height never bothered me but the sway of the jib from inexperienced operators was a bit arse twitchy at times. Been up Rhyl Sky Tower on a 70m picker in 2002 which was the biggest picker in the UK at the time. Only when the basket was tied off was when I felt ok about it.

The dog leg part of the hotel is starting to make an impact on Joe Mercer Way. Currently on level 3. With level 4 starting.

Dont suffer from Vertigo, I just prefer my feet to be on solid ground !

Same designers as City's new North Stand- Roma's new stadium features a proper home end, it's a pity that certain people at the club would rather chase cash instead of giving the ground a better atmosphere.

Its look like they have copied Spurs and Everton staduim and put the exective boxes on the other stands

Still a bit to finish on that for the full thing to come together.

First reaction though, changing the louvered panel to a perforated one is a big big upgrade. The horizontal panels are darker and look better than in the visuals. They look the same colour as the perforated, is that how they looked in person? Suppose worth waiting till the caps are on. The shiny metal I think is a backing plate for the brick faced precast to come. Surprised they are not including one of the side panels as the solid verticals, described as fritted in the last NMA. Good photos Jrb, should hopefully be fully assembled within the next couple of weeks.

Do you think the two main stands will get done one day ? Also saw an article on Facebook recently one of those silly publications. It was called AI of premier league grounds 100 years from. Basically everyone ground was a bowl with wrap. Which is I think what will happen to most one thing I thought tho was do you think we will be able to keep the spirals or at least the points in the air even if they become the inside of the ground and get wrapped I think that would be something different and cool but I cannot describe it or mock it up

Plans & CGIs exist for CB & ES to be extended upwards & outwards to enclose the spirals.

Capacity will rise to 78000.
