Northern Soul- Sssshhhh.... Keep it to yourself

My mate bought Dena Barnes at The Casino off Keith Minshull for £10.

I earned £11 a week back then.
On the Monday o got a list from Selectadisc in Nottingham and there is was, one of 200 " special" copies.....bootleg in other words.

75pence

Bought it, same copy as my mate!
On other words he was ripped off.

Still got it.
Actually...ive just remembered another track that i think is my all time fav northern track....Outta my mind by Rain with Charity Brown
A magical track which you just have to dance to,no two ways about it! ; )

Good poppy dance record, but hey that's the magic of Northern Soul.

One of my earlier big tunes was ' And Suddenly by the Cherry People.
Don't get much poppier than than, I was young tho!

Not heard that one before, cheers for posting!
Nowt wrong with a gud dance record..i,m not a northern expert by any means and i,m aware that some of the older ,more serious ,enthusiasts prefer non commercial tracks..i couldnt give a flying ...tbf,and tracks like outta my mind, what, and Time will pass you by are right up there as songs which make me want to dance.instantly.i still play five a side footy reguarly and one of the oldest lads who plays has started going off to soul weekends...i swear his football and movement/sharpness have increased..that says it all really ; )

A fine musical genre, although the die hard stalwarts among you may say it's not a genre but more a way of northern life. A progressive rock fan back in the day but attuned to most styles with northern soul hitting the beat.

Whether strutting your stuff at Wigan's casino, Blackpool's mecca or the Stoke On The Trent it all had the same resonance. All music has a tendency to metamorphasise and northern soul was no different as it's beat became more frenetic and it's dancing more athletic which didn't quite suit my mantra with spins, flips and that all important Jackie-Wilson-sway.

They say on the intraweb that it’s a lifestyle and all about the artists who didn’t get famous and that is because northern soul is distinct and very different from the soul followings in the United States. The fashion was different, the dance was different and nothing like a Soul Train — more like the moves in Bruce Lee’s martial arts films and a very fascinating paqrt of British subculture.

Dobie Gray .

What is wrong with the classic thread?

It didn't come up on the previous thread notifications as I was inputting the thread title, also I ran a search on Northern Soul. Sorry boss and no mither but since Damocles's left it's all gone to shit : /

Feel free to merge.

I'm with you all the way....Well into prog rock etc etc but there is something fresh and basic about Northern Soul, love watching the dancing but never dared make a tit of myself. The fashion and everything that surrounded it was great, cant see it dying out, even the yoofs are cottoning on to it. Still try and find a few really old classics on youtube but sadly most it was too early or unknown for t'interweb.

There's loads on YouTube mate, sometimes you have to put the artist first, or then again the title.

Pick a tune you can't remember the artist but you can remember the title and let's say it's a popular 'song title',
"I can't help loving you!"
You'll get Tom Jones
Ray Charles
Someone doing their own cover, then eventually you'll get Paul Anka.
It's amazing how much of the ultra rare stuff is on there.

I moved on in 76 to the more modern New York / Salsoul/ Latin beat, eventually getting into modern soul and rare groove.
I always kept an eye on the NS scene and supported small venues when mates were trying to launch a night.
I can hear something new now and it's either brilliant or shite.
But one mans meat etc.

But please don't anyone put KTF or KOKO.
We never said those things, the patches did.

By the way, probably one of the greatest intros to a dance record.

A mid thread Lavinda Past choice and just trying to break down some moves on our cushion floor. Nice sound.

Read this thread late last night and some really fine tunes on offer. The forum mustn't have been able to embed them back then, so you have to manually open the tube and play them in there.
