Nottingham Forest (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

At one point last night we had 94% possession.

But “dont have enough ball retaining players”.

Apologies. I thought the subcontext of recycling possession with meaning - with the purpose of scoring goals, not just retaining possession - was implied.

We don’t retain it well enough to kill games either. As proved with this, 94% possession at one point but still susceptible to a counter.

So what is your issue?

Have you ever thought for just a second that we may have just got unlucky? Play that game 100 time and we win 99 times. Shit happens.
My issue is that shit has happened all too often this season, frequently against poor opponents like Foeest and Spurs.
We win that 99 times out of 100 do we? Like Chelsea and Brighton I suppose.

This has been our issue all season and is the reason we've dropped so many points from winning positions. We can keep the ball and play simple passes no problem. At times at the start of the second half, when possession was up at 94% we played some excellent football. But we weren't going anywhere. So after a while we try to be a bit more incisive. But when we were at our best that came from our wide players beating their man, or it came from a clever shift in tempo. Slow passing suddenly turned into a quick incisive ball into space to someone running in behind. The goal against Leeds was a great example of what City used to do regularly and that's exactly what we needed to do at 1-0 up against Forest. Tire them out chasing the ball, slow the tempo then bang - quick pass into space and a pull back/pass along the 6 yard line and it's 2-0. From there you do exactly the same and space opens up as Forest commit players forward making it easy to go and kill the game.

What this City side do is pass pass pass and then suddenly someone plays a pretty ridiculous ball or someone turns into trouble/runs at their opponent and loses the ball. Immediately we're in trouble.

The fix is simple. Off the ball we need to recognise the space and patterns to attack better so we can control the game but still create chances, without risking giving it away and conceding. The second bit is to not defend like amateurs. Their first goal is why you don't play two full backs who can't defend. It's piss poor. The second is players ball watching and defending people rather than space.

The issue is, this should have been fixed by now in my opinion. It was in evidence against Chelsea, Brighton, Bodo - it's been there all season.

The positive is Pep will fix it and we'll be back to the winning machine we once were - but it's possibly too late for the league title now.

I agree in general but at 1-0 and 2-1 we had the game in the palm of our hand but over did the no-risk, don't lose the ball at all cost strategy.
Which is fucking annoying for a team that has won the title on goal difference, and has occasionally gone into the last day knowing a draw would be enough due to the high number goals scored in previous games.

I generally feel we are passing the ball around way too much. I wish our players would just have a fucking go more like they used to. Yaya, Tevez, Aguero etc all would have every now and then twatted the ball from outside the box rather this endless sideways passing shit that we have become overly obsessed with.

For fuck's sake just shoot sometimes

Just seen Dermot Gallagher give his view on the penalty shouts, thank fuck he’s retired, frankly I don’t think either were, Haaland made the most of it moving towards the keeper and Rodri and Anderson it was just a coming together . Gallagher said Haaland was a penalty and Rodri fouled Anderson! What a fucking tool.
Rodri / Anderson was a follow through. Still a foul.

I thought Semenyo was poor ..granted he scored a goal but did nothing else.
Erling is making some good runs but no fucker passes it to him..
He put a great free kick inches over near the end .... and played a superb low ball across the Forest box in the first half, which should have been put into the net by another City player.

I didn’t think it was. He turns his leg away from the ball into the keeper.

What's wrong with that though? It's no different from when Grealish for example used to draw contact to win a free kick. You make your opponent commit and then take the contact. You can go "looking for contact" anywhere else on the pitch and the foul is given. Haaland sees the keeper come and happily takes the contact, but it's a penalty. I'm not sure what City need to do to get a penalty. Foden gets a shot away then completely wiped out against Newcastle no pen. Solanke kicks through Guehi to score, no free kick.

Meanwhile Gabriel flaps like a bird and falls over and the goal is disallowed.

Seems to me if a City player gets kicked it doesn't matter because they look at wider context and decide to make it irrelevant.

If you change your direction into the keeper then you aren’t going to get a penalty. If that had been given against us, I’d have thought the striker had conned the ref.

weve seen them given that annoying part and sometimes for less contact
