Hi, please excuse me if I’m posting this on the wrong forum but if possible I would like to ask for some help.
I’ve been a blue for well over 20 years and three years ago set up the Donegal Branch of the City Supporters Club. We have around thirty members, which is a great effort considering that we are in an area that is almost completely dominated by red shirts (the rags, Liverpool and Arsenal).
Anyway, my local team here in the North West of Ireland is a club called Finn Harps. Harps play in the 1st Division of the League of Ireland but at the moment are in real danger of going to the wall because of serious levels of debt (nothing new there in the world of football). Harps are a small club, and the vast majority of their income comes from fundraising activities. Although many of you may never have heard of Finn Harps, there are some strong links between the two clubs which I have listed below.
At the moment the club are trying all sorts of fundraising activities and with the World Cup just around the corner, I have organised a World Cup Prediction Competition. Basically, you have to predict the outcome of all the matches at the World Cup and predict who the top goalscorer will be. Entry fee is 10 Euros (around £8) and 50% of the entry fee goes towards Finn Harps and 50% of the entry fee goes into the Prize Fund. So, for example, if we receive 200 entries, that would give a prize fund of 1000 Euro. The more entries we receive, the bigger the prize fund. It also keeps the World Cup interesting, especially for us Irish who can’t be there because of that Henry cheat!!! You can pay by cheque, credit card or via paypal by following the link below.
I have organised this myself for the club and would be grateful if any of the people here on bluemoon would help me out by signing up. Some links between Harps and City (both clubs of which I’m a lifelong supporter of) is that City visited Donegal in 1984 and played a friendly fixture against Harps at Finn Park. The final result was a 5-0 victory for City, with Derek Parlane, Neil McNab (2), Kevin Bond and Gordon Smith scoring the goals. The City team for the game on Sunday 12th August 1984 was: Alex Williams, Ray Ranson, Clive Wilson, Andy May, Paul Power, Mick McCarthy, Neil McNab, Graham Baker, Derek Parlane, Tony Cunningham, Gordon Smith. Subs: David Phillips for Ranson; Kevin Bond for May and Jim Tolmie for Wilson.
Also, during his time at City, Paul Simpson spent a few months on loan at Finn Harps from City. Our Manager of the time, who was a Driving Instructor in his day-job, actually learned Simpson how to drive!!
And finally, the current City keeper Shay Given was born in Donegal (about 15 miles away from Finn Harps’ home ground in Finn Park, Ballybofey). Given went to School in Stranorlar (about a mile from Ballybofey) and also played for Harps at youth team level.
Harps played in European competitions on a number of occasions in the 1970’s, and amongst the clubs they played were Aberdeen, Everton and Derby County – all in the UEFA Cup. Derby actually beat Harps 12-0 at the Baseball Ground, and this is still a record score for Derby.
So, many thanks for taking the time to read this post. If you are in a position to help me out, please sign up for the Prediction today. As I said, it would be gratefully appreciated.
