Official Champions League Thread

Hope first game is away, I'm in Germany when the first games are played so won't be able to make if at home. Leverkusen would be the perfect away game though!

I Hope we get Barcalona, then I'd take anybody.

No shame in coming 2nd to Barca, but the potential global appeal of topping a group with them in it would be incredible.

Exactly the sort of oppurtunity this club should jump at.

On my sons stag in Munich in mid Sept.. could our recent run of "wishes coming true" continue!!!???? What a game/venue that would be, might top all the great Europa aways I got to! Believe...

how's this for a group and it could happen!

barcelona
ac milan
city
dortmund

I'd have that. I want AC and Barca, and Dortmund out of those we can see now. Did want one in Germany too, overall it'd be perfect as is for me really.

Have to say though, I don't care who we get. Just happy to be in the mix with teams like this. Excited!

-- Mon May 23, 2011 2:25 am --

Forgot to add, i'd want us to win that group too.

Just looked at the UEFA coefficients and it may be possible that we make it into pot 3

Pot A : Man Utd / Chelsea / Arsenal / Barcelona / Bayern Munich / Real Madrid / Inter / Porto

Pot B: AC Milan / Lyon / Shaktar Donetsk / Valencia / Benfica / Villareal / CSKA Moscow / Marseille

Pot C: Zenit St Petersburg / Rangers / Ajax / Bayer Leverkusen / FC Copenhagen / Fenerbache / Man City / Twente Enschede

Pot D: Borussia Dortmund / Basle / Napoli / + other qualifiers.

Depending on who gets through qualifiers, groups could look something like above.

Edit: Whoops - I left out Olympiakos who would be in pot 3 (higher co-efficient than City)

Seems to me touch + go whether we will end up in Pot 3 or Pot 4.

City are guaranteed to be in Pot 3.

There are five teams with lower coefficients qualified directly for the group stages:

Lille
Borussia Dortmund
Napoli
The Swiss champions
Oţelul Galaţi

There will be five qualifiers from the Champions' Playoff. There can only be two with a higher coefficient than City: Rangers and FC Copenhagen.

That would make City the team with the 24th highest coefficient of the 32 at worse.

If Rangers or Copenhagen fail to qualify via the two rounds that could put City up further.

There are five qualifiers from the non-Champions Play-off round. If any of the likes of Benfica, Dynamo Kiev, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, or Villarreal fail to make it through, they could go higher still.

City are highly unlikely to make Pot 2.

That means would could get one from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter, Porto or maybe Bayern from Pot 1.

They could get one from Valencia, CSKA, Marseille, Milan, Shankhar, Zenit St Petersburg, etc from Pot 2.

There could be one from Lille, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Basel, Oţelul Galaţi, plus possibly BATE Borisov, Maccabi Haifa, Dinamo Zabreb from Pot 4.

So does this mean it doesn't matter if we're in pot 3 or 4, because we still get top teams from 1 or 2 regardless?

It does matter because in Pot 3, City will get a weak team from Pot 4 in their group. If City were in Pot 4 they could end up in a group with Barcelona, Valencia, and Fenerbahçe!

City have a excellent chance of going through in second place.
